chris sidwell's "tour climbs" states that they are so unpleasant that he recommends an alternative: splitting it into 2: bourg st maurice to tignes and val d'isere to col d'iseran.
putting aside the fact that i can't see what he is on about (there is no connection between tignes and val d'isere and cold'iseran), i am wondering whether his view that the tunnels should be avoided is sensible (at least for climbing when you are going slowly) anyone have experience of them?

I didn't have any problem - a bit of welcome shade if anything.
Some of the ones past the lake have holes in the side and aren't all that dark anyway.
That was afternoon - we stopped at Val d'Isere, having come over the Cormet de Roselend first. Maybe time of day makes some difference?

No problems here and I was there in July. Maybe take a small 1 led rear light but the tiunnels are lit. Just pedal fast when you enter them. There are no tunnels after Val 'dIsereM.Rushton0
