Fulcrum Racing 5 Shimano Hub problem
Hi, i have just bought a pair of Fulcrum racing 5 evo wheels. I bought these to upgrade my wheels on my bianchi bike. the cassette was a hg50 shimano which i have taken off my old wheel but wont fit onto the shimano hub on the fulcrum wheels. i have checked pictures of hubs and it looks similar to a shimano hub but the rear cassette goes on about 5mm then hits raised ridges which prevent it going any further. it does look different to a campag hub so i dont think i've been sent the wrong wheels.
any advice or if you need any more info to answer the problem i would be happy to help
thanks

the above link too is a picture of the hub0 -
What cassette do you have? If it's a 13-anything it has a different construction to the 11 and 12 cassettes. That could be your problem. It doesn't get any easier, but I don't appear to be getting any faster.0

it is a hg50 8 speed, 13 - 28.
so that maybe the problem you think? its a shimano sora groupset. do you think if i get another 8 speed cassette but say 11-28, that would solve it? also would i be able to replace the current 8 speed with a 9 speed, or even a 10 speed?
thanks for your help!0 -
Possibly the freehub is Shimano 10 speed only, and you are trying to fit a 9 (or 8) speed cassette ?
I think that for the 10 speed only freehub, the splines are deeper for the larger 7 or so sprockets.
I believe it is possible to get a freehub which will take 9 speed Shimano casettes.0 -
hi, rather than replace the freehub on the wheel do you think replacing my current 8speed cassette with a 10 speed would work?0
-
Hello , you will need to fit a 10spd cassette to solve this problem. The fulcrum freehubs are not 8spd compatiable.0

hi blackrock, thanks for the info. i was using the shimano sora groupset with the 8 speed cassette. if i replace this with a new 10 speed cassette on the new rear wheel and a new chain will this work ok?0

You could try here for the Fulcrum tech docs. They say that you can only use 9 & 10 speed blocks with an 11 or 12 bottom cog - that would rule yours out on both counts.
Some Fulcrum wheels have a shimano 8/9/10 freehub body, but not yours by the look of it.
You can upgrade the cassette to 9s/10s but you'll also need to change the chain to a narrower 9s/10s, and your shifters as the indexing won't be correct.
However, I have an email from Fulcrum tech support telling me categorically that "it is impossible" to fit an Ultegra 6600 cassette to a Fulcrum Race 3 8/9/10 freehub, and it's on there very happily with a spacer from my LBS. So it's worth having a try. Good luck.[/url]It doesn't get any easier, but I don't appear to be getting any faster.0 -
Hang-on.
Don't buy a 9 or 10speed cassette, because it won't work with your Shimano Sora 8sp shifters.
You could get a 9sp or 10sp cassette, but if you do this you'll need to change to 9sp or 10sp shifters, which will be pretty expensive !
If your cassette goes on the splines on the freehub at all, then it is Shimano-fit : Campag is totally different and it wouldn't fit at all.
If the cassette only goes on a bit , but not all the way, because the splines start-out shallow but then become too deep and the grooves in the cassette aren't deep enough to fit them in, then that sounds like it's a 10sp-only Shimano freehub.
The pictures from Wiggle which you link at the top show a freehub with stepped shallower-then-deeper splines on it, but they are selling it as a 'Fulcrum Shimano 8/9/10 and SRAM Freehub Body' so it should fit 8sp not just 10sp.
But it doesn't look like this one - which is what CRC are selling as the 8/9/10sp version
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=26478
Here's another site with 10sp-only, looking like the Wiggle version not the CRC
http://www.stylefeeder.com/i/qwwnf77g/F ... mano-Hg-10
And an 8/9/10 looking like CRC not Wiggle
http://www.biketiresdirect.com/pcas9f/c ... ody/pp.htm
Here's someone asking a similar question and being told that 10sp-only freehub bodies are silver and 8/9/10 are black
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/in ... 740AARqbpC
Look here http://www.fulcrumwheels.com/repository ... e_list.pdf
- on p23 , the diagram shows a Campag freehub, but it lists part numbers for three different types
- R5-014 for Campag, R5-015 for Shimano 8/9/10 and R5-019 for Shimano 10-only
I reckon you have that latter 10sp-only freehub.
I reckon the picture Wiggle have is of the 10sp only version, the picture CRC have is of the 8/9/10 version.
However, Wiggle's description says 8/9/10, so assuming they have the wrong picture but right description, you can replace it with the one they're selling and then your 8sp cassette will fit0
