    cheers for that!

funny as I've just been there I couldnt get out fast enough,it was just as you read on here, someone putting a kids bike togetter(and I do mean kids one with pom poms on the handlebars),then asking would they like the service plan incase anything should go wrong lol,as I was walking out a man asked an asisstant for some help to buy a bike, the assistant must have been no more than 17-18 and his reply was "sorry I'm working on a bike" .

Are you likely to need those bits so soon? The chain on my BMX lasted about ten years...

Yes & BMX chains are tougher & do not see half as much mud (which is a great grinding paste) as a MTB.

I'll bet you needed to replace the chain, chainring & rear sprocket all at the same time on the BMX after 10 years 'cos the chain should have been very worn out.

If you keep on top of chain wear it will be cheaper in the long run than letting a chain wear out so much as to take the cassette & chainrings with it too

If you have any money left over see if you can get a chain wear tool , so you can ensure it doesn't get to 1% wear and start taking the casette with it as stated in the above post, only takes 30 sec's to check but always give peace of mind before a ride.

well I rocked up to halfords with my £75 voucher in my little grubby hand to buy the xt cass + kmc chain only to be served by someone from the car department! after rummaging through a draw for 5 mins looking for the xt cass he was told they dont stock xt cass and have to order in,same for the kmc chain only stock the bmx ones,so he passed me over to the "parts man" to order them in,where I then stood for 10 mins whilst he tryed to order thembut after 10mins was told he'll have to ring me in the morning as he couldnt do it lol ,funny thing is I was told yesterday that I had to go instore to order and not on the phone! so lets see if he rings me tomorrow!

guess what? no phone call from halfords about my order,so i ring them and get told "hes waiting to hear from shamano if they have any XT cass in " which made me think I'm getting the run around as I would have thouhjt each halfords would not be ringing shamano up themselfves and would have a main centre for ordering parts?

yeah mate but I'm trying to get rid of a £75 halfords voucher,so I'm guessing I'll be paying the top price of any parts they order in as no one orders in with halfords! or buy the sh*t they stock, which on a quick look nothing seemed worth getting.

not sure now if it makes sense getting it from halfords if I could buy 1 for £40 but what else would I get? and not have to price loads for.
  • Without me wandering through the Halfords site (sorry, no patience for window shopping tonight), how about stuff like:-
    A good quality lock
    Helmet
    Work stand
    Maintenance tools?

yeah was just looking at that, seems ok and its 3 for 2 as well so might just go for that? £75 for a xt cass is a bit steep even for halfords!

Just thinking of the stuff in my local halfords: Tyres? a lifetime supply of tubes? they can order in hope stuff if you fancy new colour co-ordinated seatpost clamp etc? SPDs? SPD shoes? Gloves? Riding glasses? Chain lube? Track pump? Cable rub patches? Muc-off cleaning kit? Gear cables? Brake pads?..........

Tools (maybe a nice multitool), tubes, maybe tyres (if they've got anything decent), lube, cleaning stuff (they often have deals on Muc Off), lights - easy to spend £75.

As you've found, any decent parts will cost top whack, and there are many, many deals online for that stuff.

think what I'll do is wait for the cass to come in,he said about 3 days? and when I go up I'll have a look around to see what they have in stock, its going to be reall hard to pay £75 for something I could get for £40,I was hoping to get the chain to go with it but not even enough left for that, looks like it might be tools and mud off.

was going to go for a thomson stem but they dont deal with them so like you said I took a look at hope but their stem is only 10deg rise but my old one is 25deg! and is about right,so dont really want to made that much of a differance up with the handlebars!or am I right in thinking I can get some more hight when I change my fork to a rigid?

Get a decent Halfords brand socket set, and some Torx bits to go with it.
