How do you know if you can convert your rims to a tubeless set up?
Im thinking bout going tubeless, Ive got, DT swiss 445 D Rims.
Can i convert these or will i have to buy a new set of rims?
How much will a conversion cost ( at a LBS)?
How much are tubeless rims?
Thanks

If I had a pound for every "tubeless Thread" Posted here, I'd be a millionaire
Seriously, so a Search, there are tons of Threads on this very subject full of useful information that will answer all your questions..0 -
as far as i know, all rims can be converted with one of the tubeless kits available. dt swiss make their own but i dont know if it is specifically designed fo your rim but my preferred kit is stans, the strip are well made and will fit spot on im sure. joes are a bit cheaper but the rim strip is alot more basic and requires a bit more faff to fit, but they work just as well once fitted.0

Yeah, you can pick up the Stan's kit for about £50-60 off the internet, might be a bit more expensive from a bike shop. That will give you everything to make your rims ready for tubeless, and all you will need is a pair of tyres, some tyre levers, a bit of time, and a track pump.
How much are tubeless rims? Not much, say about £60-70 ish? But you don't need them.
Best ways of saving money when going tubeless are buying specialized tyres, because they do the cheapest tubeless ready tyres around (I think).
You may also want to consider going ghetto, where you use a.. modified.. bmx inner tube instead of Stan's rim strips. This saves a lot of money.
And if I had a pound for every reply that told someone to do a search when they could just offer advice instead..0 -

ditto. although this one has been answered very recently, maybe there needs to be a sticky for tubeless advice or summat. seems a popular question at the moment.0 -
I don't think stickys actually help anyone. People who are advanced riders will have specific needs probably not covered by a sticky, and people who aren't advanced riders think they have specific needs.
They also seem to just be clogged up with useless bits that take ages to filter through. Useless if you have a specific question most of the time.
Anyway, most people don't mind offering advice now and then. Sure, the 1000th "what bike for £1000 thread" does get a bit dull after a while (I blame c2w), but with new deals coming up all the time, relevant knowledge has to be recent.0 -
agreed, i am also a fan of giving an answer to a question and if the best i can be bothered with is "do a search" i just avoid the topic. i do sometimes give most of the advice and recommend a search to find other folks experiences instead of just believing me though.0

It is a combo of both that help. The stickies can provide good background info and may solve a problem, but they can always ask.
Some questions are asked so often anyway: there is a noise coming from the BB etc. Some good links in the FAQ and workshop tech guides.
Howver we are in the process of updating the stickes to make them easier to navigate.0 -
Those kits are a rip-off imo - just use this guide
http://www.tubelesswheels.com/
Worked a treat for me - might work differently with different rims though.0 -
that does look very good, and plenty easy enough. i fi didnt have a spare stans kit or wasnt running ust rims, i would defnately give that a go, i didnt realise how simple it would be. i think i would still want to use tyres designed for running without tubes though.0

I've used it to put a non-tubeless tyres on a tubeless rim, and a couple of different tubeless tyres on a non-tubeless rim.
Not tried a non-tubeless tyre on a non tubeless rim yet.
I did the Megavalanche using this method on a dual ply UST high roller on a mavic 719 non-tubeless rim. No problems/burps/punctures all week.0 -
looks a good idea, i might give it a go just out of interest with my older stumpy which is tubed at the moment.0

I am on that, just about to put new tyres on one of my bikes I might as well Give It a go, although I can't see If It says If this will work with foldable tyres. It's not a ornament, so ride It0

There is a great website called Just Riding Along - have lots of tubless info, and show combos that wrok well (and ones that don't!)0

Thanks for reply's. I did try and do a bit of reaearch before posting but drew a bit of a blank. (didnt do a search on this site, as previous searches have been "fruitless")
Maybe, i will persevere with the search, as im obviously doing something wrong.
Thanks for taking the time to reply and now i have lots of info to go on. (will make more effort to search in future though)

The search on this site really doesn't seem to work that well in my experience. Always seems to bring up some of the same threads whatever you search for and they are often not relevant.0
-
it is pretty weak, i often struggle finding threads with it which i know the content of as i posted them!
this is why i prefer to ofer answers as opposed to the old "do a search"
like my mum says, if you cant say anything nice, ont say anything at all. now, wheres that ht vs fs thread..........................0 -
Don't use the search bar, but the link in he top right. Always click - 'search for all terms'.0
