Hi, I'm new and overwhelmed by the range. I've done some initial reading and know about Contessa, Trek & the other main brands but is there an easy way of comparing what each of them has got ? I'm brand new to biking but can pay £500 to £1000 as I want something that's going to last me at least a few years. However, how can I tell how comfortable a frame is ? How low over the handlebars should I be ? I'm 5'6", 10 stone, 29" leg. I'm teetering on the edge of shops and just need some support. Frightened of making a mistake with this 1st purchase. All advice greatfully received ....

Ask if the shop will allow you to test ride - even a quick jaunt around the car park will give you an idea of fit and feel. What feels best is personal to us all. Ask the shop to make adjustments if necessary ie higher bars etc.
Also you don't be afraid of mens bikes as some may fit you just as well!0 -
Hello,
I have been riding for about year and when I upgraded a few months ago a was overwhelmed but bit the bullet and went and talked to a few people in bike shops. They were all really helpful and patient and let me take the bikes for a quick ride around the carpark (not the same as on trails but it does tell you if the geometery is right for you).
This might just be my experience, but I did find local and independent bike shops more helpful than big chains. One, which begins with E, was reluctant to even get a bike out for me to look at in the shop!
Like the last poster, I discovered that I didn't need a women's bike and I am 5'7, plus suspensions can be adjusted as can some brake bits so if you have small hands you can reach comfortably.
Hope this helps!0 -
P.S.
I have a Cube bike, which I love. They have all the technical bits you need and also come in lovely shiny colours!

Thanks everyone. I've looked at earlier posts with some of your bike recommendations. I shall start the hunt tomorrow - wish me luck ...0
