Scottish and Welsh devolution

Reading some of the comments in the Libyan bomber thread it does strike me as bizarre that in a supposedly united kingdom there can be several legal systems and differences in health care provision, surely the ultimate postcode lottery? So should Scotland, and Wales, be given the stark choice of accepting that they can be part of one nation, united under a common legal system and entitlements, or be forcibly given their independence?

Not sure it's really anything to do with devolution.....the legal system, and education system notably have been different up here for a very long time.

But I reckon if you asked jock public (see what I did there ) he would say force independence on us???? we have been asking for it for years, but you wouldn't let us go!

But the different legal systems thing happens in other places as well. consider the US. each of the 50 states have potentially differing legal systems.....even more complicated than here.

And there is a postcode lottery. Every where. for lots of things.

    Schools
    Healthcare provision
    Jobs
    Public Services and Amenities.

thing is though....you can pretty much choose where you want to live....

I think England should at least be given the same level of independence as Scotland and Wales, so that we are three independent states within the United Kingdom of Great Britain, much like the states are within the USA. Oh, and England should have it's own anthem too.

The National Health Service should be just that, with equal benefits of service throughout the UK.

no, the English anthem is 'ere we go..' - sung to the tune of 'three cheers for the red, white & blue.....'

It only has three words, making it easy to remember....

Highly emotive subject so let me get in early with a few bullet points.

we ( the scots) will only gain independance when we are of absolutely no use to the union ie when world peace breaks out and there is no oil left in the north sea.

    we will then be Fu#%ed

Kenny McCaskill is a Muppet and should be sent to Libya to clean up camel shit...All of it!

The SNP are raping education and the police force to pay for there ridiculous populist policies. trust me....wife's a teacherr, brothers a cop.

Flower of Scotland is dirge and should never be uttered in public again.

differences in the legal system does not mean it's any better....look at the "not proven" Verdict how many ne'er dowell's and miscreants are still chibbing with impunity because of that debacle.

    I could go on.

One anomaly of the system I can't get my head around relates to the funding of higher education in Scotland and the apparent discrimination against English and Welsh students.

As I understand it in Scotland tuition fees are paid for by the state and Scottish uni places have to be open to students from EU countries with the exception of the English and Welsh-I know the reason for it is to stop a flood of applications from south of the border but how is it not blatent discrimination? I'm suprised some politicised student hasn't challenged it.

Absolutely. The Scots legal system has been very distinct from that in the rest of the UK for centuries, long before any West Lothian Questions started being bandied about.
