Does anyone know if this tyre comes with the black chili compound ? On mtbr they advise it does but the conti bike uk website says not. If its not black chili compound does anyone know what the compound will actually be ?

Conti site is pretty clear and there is at leat one entry among many that agrees with Conti. To be fair who you going to believe the people who make them or customer reviews?

My 2.4s had "black chilli" written on the sidewalls, my 2.2s don't...

Most places I've looked have said it's only in the 2.4s.
  • Is it just me or are these tyres the absolute mut's nuts? I installed the 2.4s, they are massive but they roll fast and grip astonishingly. I had been a big fan of high rollers but I don't think I'll be going back.

Just black chilli on the 2.4s, but in the real world apparently it doesn't make a huge difference.

And no, its not just you. Rubber queens rule.

my sidewall ripped in two places after about 6 weeks use! now running mountain kings and they seem to be holding up

Rubber queens have got thicker sidewalls then the mountain kings, must've just been bad luck.

Just normal rubber, no black chilli. They still rock.

So what is the rating of the non black chili compound - 55a, 60a , 70a ?

Rubber queens are made by continental, not maxxis. Don't try to compare. According to continental, they even wear less, as well as roll faster, and grip more with black chilli.

    ok you can buy both.

the non chilli is made in china & is greadfull, soft sidewall & heavier & is pretty wide .

the chilli tyres are made in germany & are lighter but still made of tissue paper.

there are loads of people selling cheap conti tyres that are non chilli as for eg orange fitted these to there stock bikes before realising it was a mistake to fit poor quality tyres.

    same issue with mountain kings.

non chilli=punctures golore you have been warned

I'm not trying to compare to maxxis. Spesh, bontrager and many other manufacturers give shore hardness for their tyres. When i'm considering blowing 40 odd quid on a tyre I like to know if its made from sticky rubber or plastic ;-)

Black Chili is supposed to be the bees knees, top super uber sekrit. Actually it's just their soft motorbike compound, but don't tell anyone  It does make a huge difference though, Mountain Kings without it are gash, with it they're still not very good but they're a million times better, for instance.

Well the 2.2 rubber queens are brilliant, the 2.4s that come with the black chilli will be even better, but you better be confident you got the frame and fork for it.
