I hate wasps!

Last night on my commute home was flying down Church Lane at about 25mph when a wasp flew straight into my face. I just managed to close my eyes and duck enough that it hit my eyebrow instead of my eye. Now I have a real phobia of wasps and can't stay in the same room as one so this to me was horrrific. Resulting effect is my swerving all over the place paranoid that its in my helmet/hair till I manage to pull over and throw helmet off and shake hair out. Thank you to the very understanding car behind me who will have had no idea why my riding suddenly became very erratic, but kept a safe distance until I stopped.

My paranoia was all for nothing, wasp gone, but seriously, just what is the point of wasps other than to annoy!!!!! Really must find my shades that vanished in the move!

I hate wasps too - but thats because I'm a Gloucester Rugby supporter tho.......!
  • Must have been the night for it! I got one of the little buggers in my hair after it went through an air-vent in my helmet. I think the impact had killed it though, as I didn't get stung. First time I've managed to take the helmet off, wave it around, scratch my head and pop the helmet back on without dropping below 20 mph too. 8)
  • I had one of the little bastards come in through my helmet vent last week too. Luckily didn't get stung but it seems like there's more around this year than is usual.

One nabbed me on the chest last week. Was concerned that it might find it's way down my bib shorts. If anyone saw me riding down New Kings Rd rubbing my nipple, I was trying to remove the sting. I hate em too.

    more of quins man myself.

Had one go in-between my lining shorts and my baggies when I was out for ride while ago. Didn't sting me but I was nearly naked with paranoia by the time I realized it had gone.

I get regularly hit by insects, which is why I don't leave the house without some kind of glasses. They don't have to be expensive ones (mine are £7 bolle ones off ebay).

Mind you, it didn't stop me swallowing some beetly thing last week....

Sailorchick, do you wear glasses when you ride? If not it might be worth investing. I had a wasp hit me right on the lens the other week scared the sh@t out of me. I always wear them now unless it's p1ssing down and I have to take them off because I cant see. Usually no wasps then though.

Edit: Arse RTA beat me to it.

+1 for glasses. The number of beasties that have pinged off the lenses... Wearing proper cycling glasses instead of my everyday frames also means my eyes don't feel terribly tired from the wind after a long ride, though this isn't really an issue on a shorter commute.
  • I used to wear glasses, then we moved house and they have disapeared. Just a cheap pair from Aldi with the interchangable lenses. They have to be in the house somewhere - the old flat was completely empty so nothing left behind!

I quite like wasps, and all flying things actually. Wasps are the only ones I won't handle because of their propensity to sting though.

I'm a Tigger - and so hate Wasps even more...!

Had one fly into the side of my head on a descent a couple of weeks ago - got caught between my sunnies and my helmet strap, and seemed to have stung me three times.

Launched my glasses off onto the road trying to get the bugger away - good job they were only the cheapos from Wiggle, eh?

Got stung on my wrist once. The Swine.

Couple times they've bounced off my lips/teeth (no sting)... scariest thought is inhaling one! Makes me wonder if I should carry some anti-histamine tabs.

I too was glad of my glasses this week. But it was no wasp that hit me, it was a huge Dragonfly, I was surprised it didn't break the glasses, but it certainly shook me up!

I got hit in the eye by something big a few weeks back going full pelt. Stunned me for a second. Really hurt too. I thought my retina had detached!

  • I got stung on the calf going full pelt about 3 weeks back. I think the impact killed it because I had to pull it and the stinger out of my leg and it just lay on the ground where I set it down (no I didn't squash/kill it). Ankle doubled in size in 3 days and I had a bright red rash about 3 inches in diameter for a week!

I think Bumblebees are worse than wasps - BBs are like furry yellow and black bullets. I swear I've been near knocked off my bike by one of the blasted things hitting me square in the middle of my forehead.

A couple of weeks ago on my commute into work I had a wasp (or some other stinging insect) sucked through a helmet vent and which then stung me on top of my (almost bald) head. It left a bit of its sting behind and it was surprisingly painful - spent the rest of the day with the effect of a really bad headache. And yes, I still wear a helmet but I am a lot less keen on them now.

No way, a bug hit me on the helmet the other day and it made a right bang, I can guarantee that if I hadn't been wearing a helmet I would have been killed or worse.

    How big was the bee?

No, wasps are worse they can keep on stinging, they're like the psycopathic teenagers of the insect world. I got stung a couple of weeks ago on the knee - mmm nice and itchy and swollen for a day or 2. Bees on the other hand obviously die after a sting, and are so more discerning about their targets, more Kamikaze pilots like.

Agreed - one kamikaze bee on the Anthony Maynard Sportive - I rode into him to be fair to the wee guy - upper thigh right - picked the sting out of my lycra.

Last week's wasp on the other hand was obviously freaked out about suddenly being trapped twixt glasses and helmet, and so went to town. Was at least three stings.

    Thank God I'm not allergic!

Bumblebees can keep stinging too. It's only honey bees that can only sting once.

    Wasps are great.

I developed a keen interest in wasps a couple of years ago, especially the differences in the noise that they make. Imagine my joy to discover a rare gramophone recording titled ‘European Wasp Noises’, in a charity shop recently. When I played it I couldn’t recognise any of the noises on there so I took it back to the shop to see if they might know what was on it. The lady in the shop pointed out that I’d been listening to the B side.

oh right - I stand corrected - B*stards all stinging insects then - death to 'em all........ Wasps and Bees are now as bad as each other (except honey bees) - cue Eddie Izzard sketch....
