are we being ripped off or what? trek 6000 price in 2008 £500, price in 2010 £725, an increase of 45%! specialised rockhopper price in 2008 £600, price in 2010 £800, an increase of 33%! and no upgrade in specs either! we are in the middle of the most severe recession since the thirties how can the bike companies justify these obscene price hikes when millions of folk are having to take a pay cut or lose their jobs!

It's just the exchange rate innit? Think Spesh 2010 prices have gone down in the US.

since 2009 prices the parts went up about 30% and the pound has been very poor recently, about the time the prices were set for the production of the bikes.

if you want VFM look to Focus bikes made in Europe so less bothered by the $

    yada yada yada moan moan...

get used to it, bikes have been massively underpriced and we're paying for it now...
  • Looking forward to seeing the prices for Cube bikes this year too. Similar to Focus, as in European company, growing massively in popularity in the UK in the last couple of years, offering very good VFM so far. Will be interesting to see how they handle their pricing structures this year. It could go either way actually.

Also, more people are now buying bike as a supposedly cheaper way of commuting rather than say, a car. iirc the cycle industry is doing rather well because of the recession, possibly why nobody will drop prices. I think a good amount of research will get you the bike you want for the cash your willing to part with. I guess it all comes down to needs versus wants.

Dont get too excited. Euro appreciated against the Pound by something like 30% since price were last set.

Cube prices have gone up aswell I'm afraid. I brought a bike last year for £500, the same model is now about £730.00 or something.

    Not Good!

Well you were warned. Many on this forum and on the net did say that prices were going to shoot up and they were right. These things don't usually happen overnight - there are lots of warning signs if you look out for them.

My Cube Ltd Race was £900 earlier this year, it went up to £1050 a few months later and the manager of my LBS tells me it will be £1120 for 2010, so nearly a 25% increase on original '09 prices.

They are selling bikes as fast as they can import them at the moment. If you had a bike company you would be screwing every penny out of the customer. Its called supply and demand got b**ger all to do with the price of the dollar.

  • While the exchange rate and cost or raw materials is the main reason for recent hikes I can assure you that when the FX rates settle no one will reduce their prices in line with the drops.

And the reason why? Because we've shown we're happy to pay the extra. So over the next year or 2 when we climb out of the global recession we'll only have ourselves to blame for over priced bikes/kit.

We all moan about prices but none of us are willing to make a stand and use consumer power. Sadly that includes me.
