I decided to take my bike to London today for various reasons but didn't decide until late last night.
I went to book my bike on the train and found that the phone line for FGW is open 7am to 10pm and you can't book your bike on any other way.
So as I rode the 4 miles to the train station I called the number and was told that I needed to book at least 2 hours in advance, gah. The phone advice was to turn up and see if the train had facilities for a bike.
Knowing full well that it would I didn't worry, but that did spark a conversation with the lady who sold me my tickets, she bemoaned the discouragement of cyclists on the train network and suggested that we all have a sit in and occupy a train! Said she would even come along.
I'm not sure that would have any effect other than to wind up the train companies. I was just pleasantly surprised to find a sympathetic ear on that side of the glass.
