big tyres on small rims?

I currently run a 2.1 on front and rear, but Im looking at getting 2.4 on the front and a slightly bigger rear too.
However Ive seen people saying for the bigger tyres you need wider rims, is this true? And will it be much of a problem to move up to bigger sizes?

my rim is just over 1" wide, would that be ok or too small for a 2.4 tyre?
I just measured my frame and forks, the max I could go on rear is 2.2, but fork will take 2.5.0 -

Not a clue what brand, they came with the bike (diamondback).
These are the tyres I have decided to get http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=58490 -
Which Diamondback, model and year?
EDIT: The 2.35 version mostlikely will fit but the 2.5 I doubt that.0 -

I run 2.5s on my 719s which are 24.5mm wide - they are only recommended to use up to 2.3s but I haven't found it a problem0

You probably have Weinmann XTB-24 rims.
So if the design of that rim haven't changed much then you have an internal width of 19.5mm.
So that means you can run the Minion in the 2.35" version.
Plus, a local guy has 2.35" Highrollers on a rim with 17mm of internal width
and so far he has no problems.0 -
I've run massive DH tyres and skinny slicks on almost all the rims I've ever owned, never paid any attention to rim width really. I think this whole "you need an 18mm rim not a 17mm rim for that tyre" is ridiculous.
2.1 to 2.4 is a big jump though.0 -
I've used "oversized" tyres myself and couldn't tell any difference between how they felt on the old rims and how they are on my new, wider ones. Remember, it'll also depend on the tyre- a 2.4 Mountain King's nothing like 2.4 inches across, Conti measure their tyres using pen*s inches.Uncompromising extremist0

Agreed for the mountain kings, but for my rubber queens, they come to 2.217 inches. And that's as close as you can expect for a 2.2 tyre. As for their other tyres, I'm not sure, but they really did mess up on those mountain kings.0 -
Ah, fair play, I've only used MKs but seen one of the other Kings- Race or Speed, probably Speed I think- does the same and assumed it'd be like that across the board. That's even more confusing Ridiculous really.Uncompromising extremist0
