I remember seeing a show on that topic while living in the states, I think that for that reason these gas tankers are prohibited from entering some ports (Boston was the city in question). I suppose the explosiveness may be a little exaggerated as the concentration of O2 may be too low to allow the thing to go immediately - I suspect it would burn for days0 -

Yup, for a big bang the oxidant needs to be in excess. Having been on the wrong end of a couple of sizeable atomic absorption spectrometer explosions [1] (whilst running on a risky nitrous oxide/acetylene mix) down the years, my Dad knows about that only too well....
