...without my bike at home.

Left it at a shop to get serviced.

I actually looked back at my bike as I left the shop with wistful eyes.

Oh dear.

Get multiple "spare" bikes - then you'll never be without!

 Yes, but then there is the gardening, the cleaning and the ironing ..... Always best to get someone else to do it!!

Unless of course your gardener is like mine, who today cut down the wrong ****ing tree. I am not an happpy bunny, and in retrospect, it might be better to do it yourself. What do they say, if you want it done right do it yourself?

Nah, much better to just tell someone else what to do.

Just buy another bike as Matt suggests.

BTW how long does it take to get serviced and how much does it cost you?

WTF is a service on a bike? Do they change the pollen filter or something? Surely you just do what's needed as it needs doing.

Servicing on bikes is for peeps brought up on cars.

     peeps?!!

Servicing is great. Give them your bike, they check that everything is in order, take it apart, put it all back together, clean it all up, oil it all up and give it you back a few days later looking like it did the first day you bought it!!

Think of it as a day at the spa, but for your bike.

While it is being serviced you can concentrate on more important things like trying to makie enough money to buy the next dream bike.

Yup, it's just a bike. Clean and lube the chain once a week and check the tyre pressures. Occasionally fiddle with brake clearances and gear indexing. Give it a wash every now and then. Replace anything that breaks or wears out.

If I was really good I'd clean and regrease the bearings in the hubs, BB and headset every spring, but I'm not and I don't.

I couldn't bear the thought of paying somebody else to do any of that stuff though; it's quality time spent with my loved one. My other loved one, that is.

I would much rather do it myself. Then I know it's done properly (especially the bits you can't see), torqued up properly and ready to go.

All I know is from where I'm from (Netherlands), you take any bike to a bike shop, ask for them to give it a good going over, clean all the bits which are a pain to clean etc. Dead common, even for normal bikes.

I hate doing any mechanical stuff. I love riding. Why do something that I don't like as part of my hobby? Seems silly to me.

I figured since I'm off to the Pyranees in a couple of days it'd be good to get a professional to go over it to make sure it's all ok.

Definitely. I get mine serviced frequently and always before a long trip.

Am sure there are many here that are looking forward to reading about, and seeing how your ride through the Pyrenees goes.

    Have a great trip.

    Cheers,

Will give a full story once I get back!

It's looking quite tough. Apparantly we ride over 29 noteworthy mountains in 5 days.... Will see if that's actually the case or not!
