Would love to hear from anyone who has completed the South-North Devon C2C (or anyone contemplating it) There's a route on Bikely.com but can't seem to boot it up at the moment to give a link. Hoping to maybe do this in November but looking for others to share the work.

I think that might be my route. Is it this one http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/YO ... ymouth-100

Bikely has been a bit sketchy lately.
  • I think the route in question goes from Salcombe to Lynton, skirting the east side of Dartmoor and cutting West side of Exmoor. But any info welcome. Looking to do this in November sometime if I can find some company ;~)

There is a national cycle route 27 which goes South to North coast Plymouth to Ilfracombe - very picturesque, but I dont know much about the northern end in terms of surface. Its all paved at the Plymouth end.
Have a look at these links

Ref: Tarka Trail. We rode the Torrington-Meeth section on Sunday and it was pretty rough and muddy. We were on road bikes - not ideal - would be okay on a cyclocross/hybred.

The section in the north around Barnstaple and Bideford is fine. The new cycle path from Tavistock - Yelverton and Clearbrook is rough (MTB or CX only). The Plym Valley trail from Clearbrook to Plympton is tarmaced. Plympton - Laira Bridge, Plymouth is a bit rough.

Hope this helps with any route planning. If you have any questions about roads along the route I'm sure myself and others will be able to assist.
  • Thanx Felgen+Yogi,
I rode some of the lanes and (very) steep climbs around Torrington- including The Big Dipper- a couple of weeks back on holiday. Couldn't see how a C2C could be done in a day if all the roads in Devon are like that ;~(
This is gonna take some planning.

    Cheers

My good friend Ken Middlemiss as well as a few others have done Ilfracombe-Plymouth in a day. It's pretty flat (for Devon!) if you stay on the cycle-paths.

Ref: Big dippers - I rode those at on Sunday at the Okehampton 100 - awesome.

Yogi, found the link at last: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/devon-c2c

I really thought my training in the Chilterns would prepare me for Devon- man, how wrong can you be! Also ref. Big Dippers- I was overtaken by a car at the bottom of the 25% one when I was doing nearly 50, and my chain came off same place the second time- crazy!
