Selecting a sub-£1,000 tandem - Dawes DUET?

We are planning to buy a tandem with flat bars and conveniently located gear changers to replace our ageing Dawes Horizon Twin. Working on a limited budget, the Dawes Duet looks attractive. The MRSP is £700, compared with £1,000 for the Discovery Twin and £1,300 for the Double Edge.

The tandem would be used for relatively short-haul day outings (max 50 miles) and some urban and local pottering, including in traffic. No particular load carrying planned. Off-road only as far as railway paths and other prepared surfaces.

A couple of questions.

1. Does anyone have any experience of the Duet, good or bad?

2. Are we missing out on any "essential" features that the Discovery Twin would offer?

3. What other tandems should we consider in the sub-£1,000 price bracket? (Key features to include flat bars, accessible gear changers and a frame option that accommodates riders of 6'1" and 5'5".)

Thanks in advance.
