I'm currently running Sora 8 speed on my Spec Allez, and I'd quite like to upgrade my groupset quite soon, starting with buying a new set of shifters (so I know which mechs I'll need when the time comes).

I've just got a new set of wheels with a Shimano hub so it's got to be either Shimano or SRAM when I get new shifters. What would people recommend?

Cheers,
pbt

P.S. I know I can't run the new shifters with the old bits on the gruppo, I'm going to buy the parts and install them all at once.

Don't get Utegra unless it's the 2010 model.
Shimano alloy levers have a BIG corrosion problem.

I have recently built a new bike up with SRAM Rival and think it's a great system. The double tap seems very natural and easy to use.

£455 for full groupset from Fudge Cycles

I've used 105 levers on my winter/commute bike for 2 years and have no corrosion or shifting problems.

If you just want shifters Campag ones work with shimano stuff. Its just the cassette that matters.

Have you ridden them in hot weather?
Sweat tends to make them corrode... although I think the latest generation levers are better than pre-2008

I think the £399 is for the 2008 groupset.

The Fudge Cycles is for 2010 (mine was 2009). There was a technology trickle down during 2009 and it significantly improved the group set from the reviews I read.

I've just gone straight from downtube shifters to Rival on my new Boardman, so I can't compare it with other groupsets, but my first impressions are that it's crisp, quick and natural to use - I just think mouse: single click for up, double click for down - apart from the oddity that if you're already in bottom gear and try to change down, you can only do a single click, which is a bit disconcerting when it moves you up - guess I deserve that for wanting to change down from 1st
