looking to getting a hardtail for my daily commute to work which is along a tow path, it's 16 miles in total so want something fairly lightweight.

would prefer a hardtail mtb but am open to suggestions,

Boardman? Have a look on the halfords website. They do some decent hybrids too, which could be good depending on the condition of the towpath

is the towpath well trodden or is it pretty rough? You might be better off with a cyclocross bike, almost roadbike fast but designed for off-roading...
  • it's fairly well kept, it's the Shipley to Leeds tow path (part of the national cycle route or something), there are a few muddy parts on the way but mostly it's flat well trodden!

    any Cyclo Cross recomendations?

Specialized tricross. Or if you can ride to work on roads instead, Specialized langster.
