Won't go into highest gear

I've just changed the gear cables on mine and Mrs G's bikes, and for some weird reason, the chain won't now drop onto the smallest cog at the back. I'm pretty sure it did beforehand as I'd only changed the cassette and chain recently, but I didn't really check it out before removing the old cable.

I've only changed the cable, didn't remove the rear mech or take the wheel out. I've backed off the limit screw, there's no tension on the cable, but still it won't go into the small cog. Other than that, it changes like a dream!

The only thing I can think of is checking the hanger alignment it case it's been bent, but it seems odd to have the problem on both bikes.

Any ideas?

Is yours Campag? I'm having a similar problem with my campag rear mech. Bit of a thread Hi-jack but which way should you turn the barrel on the mech body if it wont shift to the small sprocket? everyother gear is fine. Is the cable too tight or loose?

    Cheers
  • It's Shimano, rear mech is a Dura-ace long cage, for a triple.

Screw the adjuster clockwise as you look down the cable into the mech. If the cable has no tension, it may be one of the stop screws - but that isn't the problem on mine.

u say you backed off the limit screw? do you mean the adjuster barrel or one of the `hi lo` screws on the mech? if its the latter then u need to re align the rear mech with the same screws u screwed!
    who cares?

Yes I think mine is too tight. You could try the 'b-tension' screw too. Are you sure the H limit is correct? Try shifting it (on a stand) with no tension on the cable. If it still doesn't go then It may be a bent mech arm.

-for future reference, if you are turning the screw on the rmech body clockwise (loosen) which way do you turn the screw on the downtube for the same effect? I guess it is turning away from the frame...
  • I've finally sussed it. Incredibly simple, as these things tend to be.
You know the 'washer' that clamps the cable onto the rear mech body, I'd got the tab in the wrong place - it was parallel with the cable, and when dropping down the gears, it just touched the inner plate on the mech, stopping it from moving in fully. Once in the right place, facing towards the cable hole, it was out of the way and changed fine.

Amazing how such a tiny change makes such a difference!

thiscocks, follow the instructions in Section 5 (page 24) of the Campag 9/10s rear derailleur instruction sheet. Getting the limit screws right is important. No amount of tweaking the barrel adjuster will correct a badly adjusted limit screw. It would be the first thing I'd look at, especially as all your other gears seem to be working nicely.
