New cyclelanes in Southampton!

After the cock-up that was Winchester Road, Southampton City Council seem to have taken mine and a few others views on board regarding St Denys Road here.

I had emailed the council a couple of times to suggest a small cyclelane on the corner by the church to dissuade drivers from cutting it and putting myself and others at risk. Just last week I was buzzed by a learner motorcyclist who got his line wrong and nearly clipped my handlebars. Having the lane there seems to remind motorists that we're there and they seem to have subconciously kept their distance for the few days it has been put in place. :)

On the other side of the road heading towards Bitterne/the river Itchen they have extended the lane from the ASL by two whole junctions. OK it isnt much yet but here is hoping that they do extend this further as this is a wide road where drivers before tended to plonk themselves at funny positions hindering safe filtering, or would pull in if they saw you coming.

Honestly, in peak rushour times I could get off and walk faster than the cars there, so improving access for cyclists will hopefully ease congestion and encourage locals to try it instead. :)

So well done Southampton City Council!

  • Downfader, I reckon you must be a stone's throw from my place, I'm up by the Bitterne leisure centre.

You may have already tried the route I'm about to describe, I used to find it a pleasant stress free cycle between home and work (Hollybrook Road, not that far from your place of work, SGH if I recall rightly)...

    Down Chessil Avenue
Past Bitterne railway station and into Whitworth Cresent
Over Cobden bridge, left into Priory Road
Left onto Horse Shoe Bridge and then straight over Tomas Lewis Way
Left into Lawn Road, right immediately after the park to join Spring Cresent
Onto Avenue Road, at the end turn right onto padestrian/cycle lane to use crossing by church
Across the Common, exiting opposite Bellmoor pub
Onto Bellmoor Road, right into Luccombe Road
Join Winchester Road for < 30 seconds before right into Malvern Road
Left into Hollybrook Road then almost immediate right into Hollybrook Avenue
Left onto Dale Valley Road, right onto Dale Road
Up the evil hill, arrive at back of the General

~5.5 miles with less than two (2) minutes of sharing road with the car commuting mayhem! :D

    Pictures/ 1000 words etc.

Virtually the same route as mine, I do go up Highfield Lane and use Spring road however. Average of 24 minutes. :)

Ah, this bit is quite similar to the route I used to take except I cycled from Bellemoor to Wilton to Dale. And yes that hill could be evil! - and dangerous since the mini roundabout got put in at the bottom.
