Best thing you've gotten away with from your LBS?

Now my LBS is normally pretty darn good. But this week I ordered a set of Saint M810 brakes, got them home and it turns out they were from a demo bike with one scratched lever, adjusting knob and also one caliper had obviousy been mounted (paint chipped off a bit) but the pads were brand new. grim.gif I got a price of €240 for both, without discs.

So I took them back and told them about it. At the same time I needed my Marzocchi All Mountain 2 fork servicing... and I decided while I was there to get some new avid cleansweep G3 rotors.

But instead of replacing one of the Saint brakes with a completely new one, I found out today after phoning that they had decided to mount both of the returned ones on my bike anyway (even though that's the reason I took them back to replace for undamaged stock :x ). When I rang up, they offered the fork servicing free without me even consenting to that unknown little deal previously ... so needless to say I was a bit disappointed this time around. Mainly because they don't charge much for fork servicing & I'd rather pay to have NEW stuff, that's why I buy it NEW.

So anyway, the time comes to pay up for the adaptor + two new discs, and by then I'd agreed to them doing the fork for nothing. In the end, they only charged me for the front adaptor which was a different size to the original. They forget all about the two 8" rotors, and I wasn't going to say anything to them... normally I do, but this time, what with the fork working like new as well, I couldn't get out of their fast enough. I can live with a few scratches for that price...

That'll serve them right for trying to pull a fast one... icon_laughat.gif

SO, what is the best thing YOU have gotten away with?

I ordered some wheels last year. They came boxed. When in the shop the guy lifted one out so I could inspect the wheels and all. I was happy and back in the box they went, with some new tyres, innertubes etc. Paid and put them in the boot and drive home.
Later (in the lounge in front off the misses of course) I opened the box and found numerous saddles and other bits and bobs in the bottom of the box!
I thought I feel a ebay aution coming on. But then the next day I bottled it an took the stuff back. They were like thanks and all but didn't seem that bothered? The guy was scratching his head saying ''I wondered where those saddles were!'' as I left.

I should of ebayed them. Am sure I would have gotten away with it!

  • Needed a top so as we were passing Halfrauds I popped in. Saw a half decent one for £25 and took it to the till. Bloke on the phone beckons me forward impatiently - how dare I interrupt his social life!. Grabs it off me and clicks it through the till. Card reader says £5? Put in my pin but am about to ask him when he hands the shirt back to me, on hanger but no bag or anything. Fluck it I thought and head toward the stairs. Mrs TCS appears outraged I haven't got a bag - about to tell me to go back when I take her arm and tell her to keep walking!

Normally I'm a fool to myself and scrupiously honest but if their staff want to treat me like dirt then I'll happily take their unintended 80% off offer*

    * mind you, knowing Halfrauds it may well have been a sale item but they couldn't be bothered marking it up

My LBS gives me 10% cause I'm a friend of Vince. Never met the bloke till I started using the shop but did by a pair of Cannondale rigid forks off him privately in the shop.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

  • Skewers, they just gave me them. Then I wondered if they were part of the package when they bought the hubs to make the Open Pros I had just paid for.

I once went in after getting a puncture and not having any innertubes or money with me asking them to use their phone, instead they gave me an innertube, let me use their pump and tyre levers, and asked if I wanted any help changing it!

Also sent my bike in to get some spokes replaced, and they replaced the frayed cable inner free of charge, didn't notice until I got the bike home.

Dude, did you trace that, from a distance off a diagram drawn by a blind man using his feet from the description given to him by someone that could only use English quotes from the movie of \'Grease\'?

Got a Spesh Globe IG8 hybrid for my (then pregnant) wife on the promise that the gear range was similar to a 21 speed MTB (it's very hilly around here) - she didn't get to use it for a bit then started riding daily. It soon became clear that the 8 speed Nexus hub gears were diabolical with almost no range and that the brakes were utterly useless.

Complained to the LBS and they gave us a full refund 3 months after we got it! We bought an MTB instead and still got our usual discount.

I think skewers are included with 105 hubs. If they aren't, then I've inadvertently got away with them too.

Otherwise I wouldn't dream of trying to get away with anything.

The bike shop here is fantastic- cyclopedia (cardiff).

I think everyone in south wales has heard of it!

Anyway for a couple of years I used them loads for pretty much everything and even bought a bike from them. They used to just give me some free energy bars and gels if I was popping in to say hi or get something.
    Awfully nice of them!

And Fraz in cycleworks in York gave me his polka dot entry for free because he didn't really fancy it! And lent me a wheel of his, while mine was getting repaired.

Mine are 105 hubs too, I was chuffed, something for free  , then I put 2 and 2 together and the penny dropped. Probably why they didnt make a big deal about throwing them in.

Nicholson's in Dundee - I took a rather dented front wheel (blowout at 50mph, yes really) in to get their opinion on whether it was saveable or not, guy disappears into the workshop, comes back a few minutes later with the rim straightened out, no charge.
Of course this isn't "getting away with it", and maybe not a big deal in terms of cost etc, but I'd much rather record this kind of thing, which is (or should be) the whole point of the LBS.

Wiggle? I have a had a packet of their chewy sweets. Considering that had I given all of the money to Spurs that I have given to Wiggle we could have bought Ditmar Van Nostrilboy, I should have got a bottle opener too.

Got my bike set up for free at the local LBS.
Not that I bought it there, the guy spent his lunch hour doing it for free. I offered to pay but he said he had had a better lunch break fiddling with my bike than sitting with the other staff
