13 mins of PB, but got a slow p*nct*re - noob questions

I took 13 mins off my personal best time on the 25mile journey into work this morning - 1h36 at an average of 15.6mph - :D

However, my chuffedness was slightly diminished this afternoon when I discovered my rear tyre was flat - again! (3rd time in as many trips) This time it was a small thorn.

Can you lovely people answer me a few noob questions please?

1 - Is there a reason, other than bad luck, why it's always my rear tyre that goes?

2 - Is it safe / a good idea to ride mismatched tyres, as I can't afford to replace both with the kinds that you say are good for p*nct*re resistance, but think I can justify one on the money i'll save on new inner tubes and puncture repair patches.

3 - I ride the 25 mile commute a few times a week, plus a group ride on a weekend of 30+ miles at around 18mph average, and I'm due to do a 120mile (gulp!) charity ride, solo, in a few weeks, so what would be my 2 or 3 top choices of tyre to get?

Decent tyres wont be that expensive. Get some racelites for about 12-15 quid in most shops iirc. I think Chain Reaction have them on sale too..? (just go a bit more careful in the wet in them)

Or spend some 4 quid on a kevlar or "slime" anti pucture strip (you can use a little pumcture repair glue to hold it in the tyre iirc).

#1 & #3 I will leave to the more experienced bods, but for #2:

I use 2 different tyres (in fact, i have 2 different wheels!) and can see no ill-effects rather than it looking a bit odd.

    1) There's about 3 times more weight on the rear tyre.
    2) Yes

Decent tyres and keep them well inflated - harder to avoid glass etc with the back wheel - when you do fix the puncture check for sharp objects inside the tyre
