Hi all,
got in to cycling a couple of years ago and started road racing this year and managed to get my cat 3 licence fairly quickly. I enjoy the road but feeling I'm getting a bit bored now so need a change. Some guys at my club go mtb rides at the weekend and I fancy joining them. The only thing is there all bling bikes, and look down on us newbies.
Basically looking for a good bike for around 500-750. Will be riding 7 stanes, mabie forest, kirroughtree etc. so a bike that would go round there would suit.
cheers.

That money will buy a very good XC hardtail.
Have a read of our What Bike threads in the buying section. I'd be shortlisting a Specialized Rockhopper, or for something a touch burlier, a GT Avalanche Expert.0 -
have a look on pauls cycles (google it)
they have some mega bargains, i bought my Giant Trance from there almost half price, i would reccemend something lighter for you as im guessing you aint going to thrash it too much.(trance is a little heavy and burly, newer one 2008 onwards is lighter tho)
not sure how much you can get a stunt jumper for but they are good bikes fairly cheapDont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

Bike snobbery is something you only reall find with roadies (no offence to you btw, just had a bad experience over the dark side of the forums myself lol). Anyways, I doubt you'll fine many people on here with super priced mtb's.... The majority will have well spec'd average priced bikes.
I say you spend what you feel you can afford and then go whip their posing asses on some trails while having some fun!
Who cares how much your bike costs!!!0 -
Is £800 a bit to much because you can get a Chris Boardman Mountain bike full susser comp for £800 and they have had amazing reviews. Check it out on the halfords website! Good luck!0

Next question.......full sus or hardtail???0
-
At this price hardtails will be lighter and better specced. Full suss will typically be over 30lbs - maybe as much as 35lbs, which will be a bit of a shock for a roadie!0

at full RRP, I'd stick to a hardtail. But Pauls cycles have some fantastic deals... pretty much all year round...
An '08 Avalnache Expert as recommended can be got very cheap: http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b1s2p1428
Or you could research a full suss Mongoose; http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b2s1p1499. Don't know how good these are but it's a good value full suss XC bike.
Ask at your LBS if they have any '08 models going with a little knocked off. I always buy second hand or last years models to get the most bang for my buck.0 -

Apologies if this isn't at all helpful but why not go get a £2k bike on the never never and look down your nose at them? You'll never look back0
