What are these bloody flies?

Ive been doing a fair bit of fell/moorland riding this summer and im sick to death of these flies with red marks. I cant find anything about them on the internet but would just like to know if they are harmless. Was out today and it almost ruined my ride, there were freaking milllions!

I forget what they are called but they are harmless. Don't bite humans, just form a big cloud around you. Quite frequently seen at this time of year. Just a nuisance, but nothing else. Quite often around large areas of heather moorland.Frank Yates0

I often get lil bugs n flies flying into my eyes resulting me in slamming on the breaks cursing n shouting left right n center

I'm plagued with flying ants at the moment. Apparently the very humid weather is ideal for them.0

I live right next to loads of big lakes. MIDGES EVERYWHERE :evil: :evil: ride 10 yards, one gets in your eye. ride another 10 yards, theres more in your eye!0
