Unusual commuter behaviour

So I've noticed something rather odd now I've done a fair bit of commuting on the bike.
Picture the scene.
I've just overtaken someone on a long stretch of road. I then come to some lights on red and I've stopped. The same person who I've just overtaken and has sat behind me at the lights patiently then hurtles past me from the off, legs spinning at 120rpm only to be re-overtaken very shortly later.
Why do this?
It's usuallly people on hybrids and mountain bikes.
I'm not particularly fast, but when somebody breezes past me I'd never think about bombing past them again at some lights.
Once is enough!

Those will be the same people who overtake in a car only to slow down as soon as they are past or sit 6" off your bumper but never overtake

I get your annoyance, but is there no pleasure in gracefully swanning by? :D

It's a combination of trying to cycle like Armstrong and a car all at the same time.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Yeah, it is normally 'not cyclist' people on cheaper bikes (not that I have an expensive bike, I like to think that riding something 30 years old that you built up yourself makes you a 'proper' cyclist regardless of price ).

What I usually do is build up some speed, then overtake them, coasting, whilst drinking from my bottle.
