Idiot in BMW

This week I started the commute to my new job. A few years ago I was riding into the Square mile, which I didn't particularly enjoy. Then I was riding to Knightsbridge, which was a vast improvement. Now I'm riding into the countryside. Although it is infinitely more enjoyable than my previous commutes, some of the driving on country lanes is downright criminal.
Today I was cycling along a country road, which had a lane in each direction. My road was carrying on straight, but I was approaching a turn to the left, going off at about 45 degrees. A BMW travelling along that road came up to the give way. Although I had right of way, not only did he carry on across, but he actually drove on my side of the road straight at me! There was not one centimetre of his car on the correct side of the white dividing line. Luckily I managed to avoid him, but I still can't believe he did it, for no reason whatsoever.
What is wrong with these people? In my time riding into London I had some close shaves, but never had to deal with something like this.

FWIW, I think that riding in rush hour traffic is London is (relatively) one of the safer cycling environments. You're riding in the middle of drivers who are for the most part for more used to driving around cyclists.
The sort of chob who near missed you would be a chob whatever he was driving, unfortunately.0 -
It's a little appreciated fact, but most BMW drivers know exactly where their cars are and are going. They may get too close but they won't actually hit you for just that reason.
It's the people in everything else that are the problem. Anything Korean, or a van (aka 4x4) will usually be driven by the sort of driver for whom driving isn't a skill, it's a chance to sit and listen to the radio for a bit. They won't have the slightest idea how close they actually are to you, and they will be the ones who hit you.

This type of thing is why I abandoned the south east entirely, despite having an aparrently nice job in a pleasant part of rural Oxfordshire.
The reality was that the roads were full of really cheesed off people with no free time trying to get to Slough in a hurry. Not interested.0 -

What a load of bollox. A shrew like woman driving an X5 managed to smash my wing mirror off the other day. Narrow country lane, I slowed down, moved as close to the left, she just carried on at the same speed, (she looked like she was shitting her self) never altered her line and BANG my wing mirror is in the road. She didn't stop.
She wasn't skilled. In fact I would guess she chose an X5 so she feels safer cos she can't drive or is very timid of driving. Either way she shouldn't be on the road.Expertly coached by http://www.vitessecyclecoaching.co.uk/

I had a problem with an idiot on the way home last night. Trying to beat my record of work to home, on the last stretch a downhill on a single track road. Car coming the other way - so I slow down and move well to the left (almost on the grass verge). Car coming up doesn't slow down and moves to my side of the road! WTF is this about!
Evasive action needed - I take to the grass and stop. The idiot in the car then decides that perhaps it is a good time to slow down and eventually comes to a halt alongside my front wheel.
I'm stopped on the grass - can't go forward because the car is in the way and they just sit there. I looked into the car to see some sweet silver haired old lady driving and her husbad (I assume) looking out the other window (at a hedge). I pointed to the other side of the road indicating that's where I thought her car should be. She just smiled and attempted to find first gear a few times, rolled back a little and then went on her way.
What a tube - and I missed my personal best by 47 seconds.

An X5 isn't a BMW, it's a van with a BMW badge, there is a world of difference. Like I said, most vans (inc X5's) are driven by people who don't see driving as a skill.
The smiliey applied to all my post, meaning it was all just a little tongue in cheek.0 -

ha...not in edinburgh...too many cobbled streets and too much rain. add a rear wheel drive car and people who don't know how to drive them and you get beemers spinning down streets!Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

near Slough the other night, had an youth in a black Mini pull out from the left across my path. I take evasive action, and give my best "what the hell?" shrug. This guy then stopss the mini across both lanes of the road, jumps out of the car and yells "Drive a f**kin car if you don't want me to run you f**kin over. Come back here and I'll f**kin finish you off".
I really can't understand his mindset. At all. I've tried to work out what on earth he was thinking, or why he reacted that way after he cut me up? I just think there are some really evil, unhinged people out there.0 -
