Roadie to MTB?

Having sold my road bike I went looking this morning for my new steed only to find that the shop has sold out of them and Trek are looking at not sending out anymore due to them pushing the 2010 bikes (aye, I was only going to buy a Trek 1.2).
Looking around at other models I spied Specialized mtb's with a better spec than Trek's entry level road bike and at a cheaper price. How come?
I love road riding, adore it and know I would miss it but is it worth making the swap?
Time to think....

No need to swap, can't you do both. BTW MTBing is merciless on components so you'll be shelling out more often on bits.Tail end Charlie

I do both - and both are lots of fun.0

Can't afford to do both. It's either or.
Thankfully on nightshift tonight so I've got a lot of time to think about it.0 -
Do both, I've been a roadie for 30 years and tried off road with my first mtb last year.
Its great, still ride the road bike but get a bigger kick off road.
Just watch out for the nettles and dog shxte everywhere 'Collapse the Light into Earth'0 -
well im 16 and i can afford to do both with hardly any financial help. Ebay my man. I have a cheap Btwin roadbike which is good enough for me. It only cost 300 and i have a norco mtb which i built myself finding good parts at good value.Mabie forest. Maybe one of the greatest places to ride.0

If you've got the money - do Both - however, if its just one then I'd go for the Road - Sportives, Charity rides, Mini-Tours, LEJOG, C2C etc etc...... are getting bigger and bigger in Britain - next year's going to be bigger again - these events are great fun to do on a Road bike, and arguably more of a chore on a MTB.0

Naw, get the road bike.
There is a bill going through Parliament to outlaw the use of MTB's on the road. Apparantly it is to do with the 2012 Olympics. The government need to justify the horrendous amount of cash these are swallowing up with medals and have targeted cycling as the best bet. They want to encourage as many people as possible onto road bikes in the hope of success in the TT and road race, and are outlawing anything with flat bars and wide tyres to encourage this.
The "Dangerous Cycles Act" is expected to go through on the nod after parliament are shown the results of some specially comissioned report that is slanted to prove that flat handlebars are unsafe.0
