Can I use a 9 speed shimano cassette with 8 speed Sora unit?

I have an 8 speed cassette with my Sora shifters. I'm looking to get another cheap wheel and cassette so I can qucikly change my rear wheel to put the bike on a turbo trainer. I've seen a couple of good deals but they come with 9 speed cassettes. Would this work??

    no, in a word.

    if your shifters are 8 then your cassette has to be too. Just swap the 9 cassette for a 8 (or never change gear...)

    The rear mech, chain, chainset can be 9 without any problems, or 10 for that matter.

    You don't say (so we have to imply, perhaps incorrectly) whether your shifters and rear mech are specifically Sora 8-speed. The newer ones are 9-speed. If both are 8-speed, then me answer would be the same as maddog2's.
