wheel as the title says the rear mech shifted into the spokes and you can imagine what carnage it did !
What i would like to know is what causes this to happen it's never happened to me before and i really don't want it to happen again.
Another thing is where do you get replacement mech hangers? Are they universal or frame/make specific?

poor gear set up.
damaged mech or mech hanger.
sounds like you bashed the hanger and it put the mech into the wheel.
hangers and Make and often model specific.
so off the shop that you bought the bike from."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Poorly set up gears, or a knock to the mech.
Contact a dealer who deals with the make of frame.0 -
Thanks for the replies my gears have always worked fine i adjust them often to so they always shift perfect and they were correctly adjusted before i set out.. I was about quarter way through my ride today when I noticed that the rear gears were slipping on the or switching from one to another every now again at the time i assumed it must of been just a bit of cable stretch and they needed adjusting. Could of this been a sign that there was something was seriously wrong with the rear mech and that i should of stopped?0

Well... yes.
Sounds like the mech took a knock and got bent inwards.0 -
I now need to replace the rear mech and i'm not sure if i need short or long cage what is the difference?0

the answer is in the FAQs.
3 rings at the front long. 2 - med, 1 short. as a rule of thumb."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

He does need to check it - but a knock to it, then a trip into the spokes is not usually good for them!0

In the Hanger vs Mech duel the Mech came out worse as the cage got ripped apart and the jockey wheel came off! The mech hanger looks ok but slightly bent so should i buy a mech hanger alignment tool and align it myself or buy a new hanger. Or both?0

New hanger after that escapade!0

straighten the hanger keep it as spare for emergency use and buy another.0
