my bike has been in storage for a while, while sorting out my back brakes/ cleaning and lubing i noticed my 9 speed chain has some areas of surface rust on the links
i checked it when cleaning and lubing it and none of the links are stiff, but would it be ok to use do you think?
or should i just replace it, if so, any good recommendations that dont cost the earth?
cheers :D

If no stiff links it will be ok.

If you want it clean try:

    White spirits or WD40

Scrub with toothbrush and it should come off, and then lube well
  • cheers mate, i might soak it in WD40 then scrub it with a small wire brush if i can be arsed, lol
not to worried about how it looks though, as long as it works ok then i am happy

An old toothbrush will be fine, not a wire brush.

The wire brush will create micro grooves and you will get rust in those grooves and then will start eating into the chain.

Toothbrush will take it off, soak for an hour or so and scrub clean and lube.
  • ok, will use the wifes toothbrush then

soak it in oil or gt40
wd 40 may not be a good idea because it displaced the oil and grease that are within the links (although it does displace water too) my advice would be use gt 40 or something like that, or if you use wd40 get it all back off and then oil the chain
Dont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

there is only one use for WD40 on a bike and that is to displace Water inside steel tubes.

Re the chain lube it and wipe it down.

and next tome it goes into storage lube it first.

  • fair point, i will keep the WD40 away, will clean it again then re lube it as advised
and hopefully it wont be going into storage again anytime soon
    thanks for the advice :D

After every ride, if I've not got time to clean the bike (I usually make time!), I always run the chain through a Muc Off Chain cleaner, then wash with water, dry it and put it in an open container and cover it in Muc Off Bike Spray to disperse the water.

It stops it rusting up, I also make sure that I at least spray the drivechain with Bike Spray too!

Makes life easier then next time you clean it off, and saves a fortune on chains.

Yeah, likewise even if I leave the bike dirty I pop the chain off and throw it in a tub of paraffin, give it a shake, then relube and refit it... Only takes minutes but it keeps it in good nick. Ironically washing the bike with water can be the worst thing for the chain, since it'll retain water for ages and may corrode faster. Paraffin drives the water out.

Not a chain lube though- it's good stuff but it's not really any different from GT85.

Standard routine, clean, displace, dry, lube.

You'll also find a lot of the rust will come off during your next ride as you shift and the the abrasive trail muck collects
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

if you need to got to extremes use acetone. but please remeber to use latex glove when using it. and also lube throughly and properly afterwards
