After a few years on a hardtail MTB and slowly reaching a decision on a new fully MTB need to get a ne road bike. My research on MTB has also involved looking at the road bikes on offer, mainly from Cube (Agree GTC), Trek and Specialized Roubaix.

Don't intend to do serious racing more sportive type for the challenge.

Any recommendations/advice welcome

The Specialized Roubaix is a good bike overall, but slightly let down by the wheels according to the reviews I've seen.

A possible candidate may be the Planet-X SL Pro Carbon Road?

...although there are numerous others in that bracket to choose from also.

  • back from vacation and continuing the search.

Looking to spend no more than 2000 Euro. So far have tried a Cube GTC overall good impression, good spec but felt the riding position was a bit too sporty - looking for a more relaxed ride for long distance.

Also tried a Trek 5.2, offered at a 2200 so over budget but a nice ride - although not convinced about my need for such a high end carbon bike yet.

Read lots of reviews about the Focus Cayo but also seen the Focus Culebro (pitched as their Sportive offering) on their website but can't find any reviews. Anyone got any feedback on this bike?

Ribble and Planet X may be ruled out since they are UK based with no dealers in Germany and not keen on the buying without trying.

Take a look at the Ribble range www.ribblebikes.co.uk. They have superb frames and you can then add your own groupset and wheels depending on budget. I bought the Nero Corsa and could not be happier with it. It was close to winning Cycling Plus bike of the year. It's been surpassed now with a newer model but the Ribble Sportive Racing has had some great reviews from the Press.

  • looked at the Ribble website, you can certainly get a good specced bike for a lot less than the Trek, only problem would be ordering at risk having never seen or had a test ride (no dealers in Germany) - same goes for Planet X.

Went to one local dealer today - had a Focus Cayo with Campag Chorus 11 and Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels, and a Wilier Montirolo with Compag Record 10 and Fulcrum racing 1 wheels , both slightly over my budget but great looking bikes. The shop is willing to set up bikes in my size for a testride.

Need to read up on the Wilier though - any thought out there? The Focus seems pretty well recommended on this board.
