Is it me or is it really difficult for students to get any work around here, in Bedfordshire. I went on holiday to scotland and there were jobs everywhere but here noone seems to be employing so does anyone know if theres any shop work available in the area or any other work that doesnt require experience?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Handy hint: We're in a recession. This means that jobs become more scarce, as companies stop hiring to reduce costs, and the jobs that are available are filled by people being made redundant.

I hope you're not an economics student...

plus i qualify for EMA (education matainence allowance) next year which is £30 a week. on top a job that pays £75 a week, means id be able to afford one :D my parents will let me do it on interest free and my dad will give me £400 towards it :D

my dreams are becoming reality :D

 £30 a week!?! WTF! I've never understood why they pay people to stay in education, when, for the last however many years, people did it because they wanted to. Uni is a different kettle of fish, I can understand loans and things, but for sixth form, I think that my tax money could be spent on a LOT better things.

for £30 a week it makes the employment figures look better, hence a greater change or re-election,, that's the conspiratorial side of course, the other more positive side is people who are in two minds to stay or go (not that clash song) could be tempted by 30notes intheir back pockets.

i know its rediculous but if you weere offered £30 a week to go and do something you were going to do anyway you'd take it. i think its wrong, but i cant complain really
  • How does it make the employment figure look better? They're not in employment, they're in education. If you mean that they don't then have to enter emplyment, I'd say they're just using delay tactics.
People shouldn't be bribed into going to college, that's immoral. I'm of the generation where we were told 'If you don't go to Uni, then your life will be worthless' and followed the rest like sheep. Of course, now the standard degree is absolutely worthless as every Tom, Dick and Harry has one, the Masters is the new contender to show the best of the field, but that costs money (with little or no funding) which seperates the rich from the poor, just like the old days.
Looking at my friends that stayed on at Tesco when I went off laughing at them saying they'll be poor for ever, is quite painful, as they have a house, no debts, good pay and more free time than me.

"How does it make the employment figure look better?"

perhaps my wording was incorrect, I should have said It makes the unemployment figures look better.
eg. 16 year old leaves school, can't find a job = 1 on the unemployment stats
or 16 year old gets £30 to stay in education = 0 on the unemployment stats

just a logical thought.. like I say it's the negative (or conspiratorial way) to look at it of course.

the thing is, you have a choice, your own mind, what you want to do as an individual.

we are very very well of living in our society we should all remember that I think.
  • But surely we have our own mind, but as others have said, if you're going to be offered £30 a week, you're going to take it, therefore not working with your own mind.

I agree, we are living in a very well off society. A little too well off possibly. I think that housing market should crash right down to the prices of 1999/2000.... let me get on the ladder, then fly back up ;)

and no I dont agree with that some would take the £30... personally I would and spend it all on drink and chips, and loose women.

meh couldnt get EMA and some of my mates got it and were spending it on crap, and they can still work and get EMA at the same time which doesnt seem fair. It only takes into account the guardians/parents income and not the students income.

i didnt qualify last year but this year the income required has been raised and know i can claim EMA, but my mate got it last year and had a job at republic (clothes shop) so he got loads of money, free clothes and spent the rest on food and booze. it'll all go towords my new bike, maybe a new guitar. but the fact is i still rely on my parents for accomodation and most of my food, so i think its hardly fair that i should get it and others dont, but id be silly to turn it down, and it times like these, everyone needs every penny that comes their way

Is it me or is it really difficult for students to get any work around here, in Bedfordshire

I live in Bedfordshire too and yes it does suck for getting jobs - I worked in a factory for 2 weeks until they decided that all the holiday workers they had employed were no longer needed. Why employ them for 2 weeks then?!

Sounds like a waste of money for the company in my opinion, but i guess you wernt signed onto a contract so you can't get made redundant then and get money for it.

and has anyone found that you submit applications and they never reply at all? would be helpful.
