Carbon Rims ( Reynolds)

I am the owner of a pair of Reynolds MV32 Clincher full carbon rims which have served me well over the last year. I was riding the Ryedale Rumble at the weekend and started to feel a rythmical pulse coming through my front brake lever.???

Stopped to have a look and see if there was something jammed in my brake blocks ( Reynolds cork ones) to find that a 2 inch section of the carbon rim at the brake surface has grooved and almost looks like it has blistered. The section has become like a ridge which is sticking out by a couple of millimetres just above where the brake block hits the braking surface on the wheel.

Anyone experienced this before.??
Anyone know if this is repairable.??

The joys of carbon rim ownership! Depending on the construction of the rim and whether it's repairable - worst case scenario is the section of the rim becoming detached and jamming in the brake - not sure if it'll be covered by warranty either as they'll claim it's wear and tear.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I had a Reynolds carbon clincher delaminating earlier this year. I'm not happy. It was being used with their carbon-rim brake pads and I wasn't asking too much of it when it went. In fact it was the first time I'd ridden it on a hilly course.

Genki - Interesting although not good to hear you have had an issue as well. How did you resolve the issue. Did you have to replace the rim with Reynolds help or was there another option.

I have since taken my wheel over to my local road shop who took one look at the wheel and have advised a new rim is in order which I am still waiting to get a price on although I expect approx £400 will not be far off. We removed the wheel and found that when you were looking down on both edges of the rim where the tyre pressurizes against the rim there was a section approx 3" which had swollen out by approx 3mm and on closer inspection the swollen section looked like it wasnt far off cracking. This is all on the part of the rim where the tyre meets the rim and off course you have the braking surface so no doubt there are a lot of different pressure points but still at that price I would expect these wheels to be up to the job. I still cant think what would cause one section of the rim to fail apart from a design/production flaw.?????

    BigAl,

That sounds like a warranty job to me. How old are the wheels?

I'm afraid the wheels were bought on Ebay so unless Reynolds transfer their warranties I dont think I will be able to claim.?????
