Can't really comment on the 3 you've listed but i have the Hayes Stroker Carbons, which i rate highly. There are usually some good deals kicking about on Merlin - i paid £130 for the set about 6 months ago. The Stroker Trails are basically the same with different levers (i.e. alu, not carbon). The Rydes that you list are also basically the same but have cheaper pads and the reach adjustment is an allen-headed screw instead of the little twisty nob on the Trails/Carbons.
  • I have Juicy 5s on my Stumpjumper and Hayes Stroker Carbons on the Whyte....both very good brakes but I think the Strokers just pip it.

I just put some XT's on mine, and almost killed myself the brakes are so powerfull.

And put xtr rotors as they were only a couple quid more and a bit lighter.

the elixers are good, but im not keen on the lever shape, xt's are super powerful but i didnt like the feel or lack of modulation. id go for the formulas personally or perhaps look at magura louises or julies

the elixir brakes are fairly astonishing, if you can stretch to them, they have fantastic power and modulation. But you have to be very very light on them!

the elixir 5's linked to from merlin, front and rear 130 quid. Astonishing, you'll only want 160mm rotors though.

I have juicy 5's and really don't like them...

No matter what I do there is always too much play before they bite.

Stuck with them for now though :(

I'm chuffed with my Hope Tech X2s - bit chunky, but fantastic perfomance (and not on your shortlist, so not sure how useful that info is!). I also had a few brief rides on Elixirs and was very impressed.

(edit) Sorry, just saw your post re. budget - ignore my nonsense!
