Bought a new tube tonight, when i got it home and took it out of the box i find that there is no thread and lockring on the outside like every other tube i've seen (its a Presta valve). Can i use it or am i going to have problems?

I haven't used the threadded lock ring thing for donkeys years and never had any problems at all mate. I would prefer to buy ones without the threaded valve stem. I wouldn't worry about it at all :D

I don't use the lockrings, but I think the thread helps keep the pump attached when inflating. See how you go with it.

I'm not a huge fan of presta valves at the best or times but it looks like the smooth surface of the valve may actually help in that it doesn't rip up the rubber seal inside the pump.

I'll have a crack at it tonight anyhow.

I agree with this, my Joe Blow pump pops off at about 90 psi if I use valves that don't have threads.

Also, if you puncture on a ride, some mini pumps struggle to stay on these too. If you have one of these as your spare tube, I would try pumping it up in the comfort of your own home with the pump you take out on the ride. (Not a problem if you use CO2 cannisters though).

I find those little bloody threaded collars are a complete nuisance...

    They wreck most pump heads.
And people screw the little nuts on too tight when the tube doesn't have any air in it; that can sometimes lead to the tube tearing right adjacent to valve stem when you do inflate it...

So I always try and get smooth valves now. :)

Part of the reason for me having to buy a new tube was that i decided to practice taking the tyre off (just to see if i could do it without tyre levers) Anyhow, the middle bit of the valve was a little bit bent and snapped off when i tried to straighten it. So out comes my spare tube that i've been carrying with me for the past year only for me to find that the valve is too short for my slightly deep section rims. So really its lucky i decided to practice and very lucky that i've not had a puncture in the past year!
