going to have a look at a few hardtails they've got in Cash Convertors after work for a work horse bike for the winter weather. Anything I should look out for as I've never bought anything from these people nor a 2nd hand bike.

cheers. for the link (I should have looked at that 1st re 2nd hand buying.)

if anyone has had any experiences or what to look at when specifically buying from Cash Convertors that would be great.

    many thanks in advance

don't know about that particular place but when buying 2nd hand I'd look at -
frame (most importantly) - any cracks/creaking, if there is leave well alone bottom bracket - grab crank arms firmly and rock side to side checking for any play wheels - check for any play in the hub, any dings on the wheels, do they run true chainrings/cassette - wear on the teeth headset - does it sound/feel gritty when you turn the bars fork - any oil leakage

try and judge each bike on its own merits and make a decision on whether its worth what they're asking
    Current Rides -
Charge Cooker, Ragley mmmBop, Haro Mary SS 29er

In my limited experience with this lot I've never seen anything I'd consider value for money (not just bikes though). Are they open to haggling?

Rubbish dump / freecycle / fat mates are a good source of bikes for me, and ebay of course.

Remember you're buying the shards of someone's broken heart  You can get good buys, since the assessors often just don't know what they have- frinstance I got a £700 Schechter (if that's how it's spelled. Which I doubt) 7-string guitar for £50, because they're not a popular brand and they assumed it was just another cheapo.[/i]

  • I'm sure I read on this forum someone picked up a DMR Drone Reptoid for peanuts as they didn't know the value of what they had.

I keep having a look at my local cash converters.

God the bikes they got, I am surprised they offered anything for them.

HT appollo rusted frame and cassettes and they want 90.00 lol

But hey like most people say there will be one that will slip through, but overall I tend to find them very expensive.

They sell used toasters and kettles.. lol for more than they are on line

just got back,,, oh dear me...oh the horror.....lol

they had some really bad full sus (you know the ones) for 100quid each....

one Ridgeback which they wanted 270 for and a cannondale for £350

they guy said they wouldn't move on the cannondale as it was worth £800...

sorry to say , ha ha ha and ha, but it was solid forks (nothing wrong with that of course), chipped paint, ruster V brakes and rear mech.

I smiled at him and wished him good luck..............

loads of junkies in that place... not going back.
