I've said never, but I should probably say not yet!
Although I live in the sticks so it's not been an issue yet, and I realised this morning, if there's a lot of traffic or big trucks near a junction, i'll just hang back and stay in the middle of my lane like a car.

Looks like "never" will win hands down.

Is this because those that blast through, and there are a lot, would not post or look at a forum such as this?

Very interesting, I did think there would be a fairer split.

Can't vote as results published but I rlj if safe to do.

Now can vote - how odd.

I suspect it's that there are a lot of very vocal anti-RLJ people on this forum.

That and there's no "sometimes, depending on the situation" option.

I do as I have said many times, but I never "blast through". It's usually a slow pootle through the junction when the road is completely clear.

Looks like there are a lot of holier-than-thou folks voting and posting on this forum.

Suggestion for next poll - Do you live in an ivory tower? Yes/no

Yeah, I'd vote for that if it was available.

Was meant to be a "Sometimes" option, and a "Only When Police Around" option for the numpties, but when I posted only the three you see came up. Sorry.

I try not to post on this subject as whatever people say on these boards - the reality is that I'd estimate between 60 and 70% of cyclists I see on my commute RLJ at the majority of junctions.

So either a lot of people are lying about about this subject - or it's mostly the squeaky clean minority who bother posting.

I'd say that people who are invested enough in cycling to peruse related message boards are probably also more likely to be invested enough to make a concerted effort to follow the highway code and cycle responsibly.

i'd say that most of the cyclists I see RLJing in south London are pretty well invested in terms of what they're wearing and what they're riding. I'd also say that there's no evidence that being "invested enough" in cycling means that you are going to obey the Highway Code. I see no evidence of that on the streets, and it certainly doesn't work for motorists where the more "invested" they are the less likely they are to obey the Highway Code.

I probably fall more into "never" than the other categories, but I can't say that I never RLJ, it's unavoidable sometimes.

I think forums tend to attract a more "straight laced", less radical audience perhaps. I don't think the people who write here, invested in cycling or not, are the sort of people who have strong opinions. I may be wrong but I doubt there are many who would attend Critical Mass ride right up at the front and be the sort of person to hold their bike in the air in protest whilst blocking traffic on a major artery in London! Not that I would do that either...

    I wouldn't now - but I did 10 - 15 years ago. And so did my wife - it's where i met her.

i even organised a few CMs - if anyone remembers the south london version which lasted a couple of years.

I think stating strong opinions on here is just asking for trouble tbh - i did it once, but i've learn to keep it to myself.

Perhaps just saying what CC said in a different way: People on this forum are more likely to be "cycling enthusiasts" and probably are more likely to take pride in their riding and consequently are more likely to do it well. So it isn't surprising that posters on this forum are less likely to jump RLs, ride on pavements and other antisocial cycling tendencies.

I see a scary mix from pootling OAP's to fluorescent upright commuters RLJ too on a daily basis. I'd say the least likely group to jump is roadies of both the male and girlie variety. I'm luckily still waiting for the splat to happen in front of me and I will go help the distraught driver over the stupid cyclist. I'd be interested to see how many people here listen to headphones while on their run too...

Why not? If you have an opinion, state it! Stand up for what you believe in! In fact I think it's easier to do this on the net than in real life. You did a good job of standing up for yourself over that whole Tube strike thing.

I'd probably be less inclined to stand up for RLJ-ing as strongly as I have here than if I attended one of the Morpeth socials and the conversation turned to it over beer!

Now that's a good point. The whole listening to headphones thing HAS to be more dangerous than RLJ-ing when the road is clear. I use my ears all the time to judge traffic.

I'm not an RLJer - used to do it - but it's just easier to just stop - less anti-social while RLJers are being demonised and a lot safer too imo

But I don't criticise others for doing it except where it is clearly foolhardy - and I see plenty of twunts putting themselves or others in danger.

Jesus, now headphones are completely dangerous in a traffic situation.

OK, RLJ can be fine and I do it, but never, never wear headphones....

To put in in context, I do it at 2 junctions - one on way in one on way back. Used to do more but have stopped for same reasons you state Porgy.

    But headphones is just wrong....

You shouldn't quit anything just because of what others think if it's something you really believe in (well within reason!).

I'm not sure about the headphones thing. I can't hear anything when I'm riding at speed because of wind noise. Literally nothing but ppssshsshhhssshhhshsspshshsshhh.

I don't use headphones at the mo but I might give it a try one day, when the commute starts to get dull.
