Manchester Wheelers

Hi,
I'd like people's opinions on the following:
I was born in Levenshulme, M/cr, and currently live in Hong Kong. I have recently started to ride a road bike. My uncle was in the Wheelers; he was a lifelong member from the 1950s, I think my Grandad (his father) may also have been a member.
I would like to carry on our family affiliation with the club, maybe even pass this on to my son when he's old enough to ride on-road. So my question is; Would it be OK to buy and wear a Wheelers jersey, even though I can't currently ride with the club? (In actual fact, even if I return to the UK it's unlikely it would be to Manchester). Would it be regarded as bogus or would it be interpretted as my way of supporting the club? After all, most people ride in replica team jerseys but don't ride for Garmin, Columbia etc... However, I know that a club is different to a pro team in terms of history etc.
If it matters, I'm a reasonable rider for a novice in his 40's. I usually do 30 - 60km rides and would be able to keep up on a typical club run, so I wouldn't be a total embarrassment to the jersey. I do not compete in races.
Your thoughts, please, especially if you are a Wheeler.
Thanks,
Steve

As with any "can I , or should I wear X" I really do think that you should wear whatever you are comfortable in. Wheelers should be pleased that you are promoting their club on an international scale never before imagined. Plus you might meet a few other Wheelers along the way you would not have otherwise met. Go for it.0

I 'won' a Manchester Wheelers jersey on eBay for a speculative one-pound bid (I'm surprised nobody who actually rides for the club bid on it).
Anyway, I wear it when I'm riding here in Hungary, mainly because I like the simple, classic design. I don't see why you couldn't do the same in the Far East.
I don't think I'd wear it in the UK, though.
You could of course join the club, at least as a 'second claim' member (assuming they take them) given the circumstances.0 -

well it is a nice top, I'm proud to wear it knowing the clubs history.

Thanks, AndyRubio - can you let me know their reply, please?
A_N_T - exactly. I am a proud Mancunian (I even support Stockport County  ).

And those club members don't have to be able to ride a bike or know the highway code to buy either!!0 -
Surely, under the circumstances, someone can get him a shirt if he sends the money to them!!
If not, I'd stick to your old West Ham shirts, Steve."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0 -

Not a member AFAIK
Yes, I suppose you'd have to turn up to join! Actually, reading some of his posts I thought he was a 'member'!!"There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0 -

Poland I think?
He keeps threatening to come out on a club run but never actually makes it.0 -

I did think about asking someone to get me one. However, I wasn't sure whether anyone would be willing.
I get mistaken for a West Ham player a lot - neither of us can play football very well...Head Hands Heart Lungs Legs0
