With the big analogue switch-off coming up my vcr/dvd will be redundant. I'm looking at getting a twin tuner Freeview h-disk recorder but have a choice of 320 or 160gb. How long will the 160gb give me in terms of recording hours - 5? 10? 100? and is there any advantage to getting 320gb? I probably only tape about 5 hours of stuff in any one week, sometimes nothing for weeks.

Thanks in anticipation.

Depending on the channel you're recording depends on the amount of space used up but most channels on freeview SD broadcast in 720*576. Which equates to approx 1gb/hour. My Humax 320Gb PVR can record 200hours according to the comet webby. Go for a twin tuner model if you can then you can record 2 seperate channels. I've got stuff on mine that is months old.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I have an analogue TV hard disk recorder with a 160 GB drive and I can get about 56 hours of programmes on it at the quality setting I use (good enough that I'd struggle to see the difference between live and recorded material).

It sounds as though 160 GB would be plenty for you, but if it doesn't cost much more - why not get the bigger drive?

I find it useful to have a big storage capacity, for example when going away when a big tour is on. I'll be away for the middle week of the Vuelta so I'll set my machine to record 5 hours of Eurosport every afternoon. That way I'm sure to catch their broadcasts even if the stages run late. When I get home, I skip through the boring bits of each stage and effectively create my own highlights programmes.

The abilty to skip through recordings is a really nice feature of hard-disk recorders. It's dead easy to miss out the ad breaks, for example. My machine skips 30 seconds at a time so I just press the button 4 times and that's 2 minutes gone. If the ads are still on, I repeat, then step back when I've overshot. No more messing about winding tapes!

I also like being able to pause 'live' TV so typically I watch through the recorder. If the phone rings or I want to go and make a cup of tea, I just hit the pause button.

I have a 160GB Humax which gives about 100 hours of recording which is plenty. Def go for a twin tuner model then you can watch one channel and record another or record 2 and watch something you previously recorded and the newer Humax models have a series link just like Sky+.

I have 160Gb and it's more than enough.
The Humax ones are very good. Work well and so easy to use.

Thanks for that - it was the Humax I was looking at.Richer have it at £119 (160gb). That's really all I need as I'll take an output into the VCR which I'll just use to play existing tapes and DVDs.

Yes, indeed! I must try to concentrate on quality rather than quantity...
