Re the revelation that your shos are old, this could be it. How flexible are they? Are there any soft spots, are they easy to bend?

I had to "retire" a pair of Specialized shoes that I'd had for a few years, when riding they'd been fine initially for shorter commutes but on longer rides I was eventually finding the shoes where not properly supporting my feet (particularly the side of my right foot) and with the unbalanced support it eventually got unbearable, even on my then 22km each way commute.

Getting a new pair however has taken the problem away and has made a massive difference.
'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze....
  • Hmmmm, I don't know that my shoes are 'old' exactly, I only bought them in Feb and it's not like I'm doing insane mileage. I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that those saying they may be a little narrow are right, and that I need to wear them a lot with thick socks to stretch them out a bit.

I'll be confirming/denying this later today by heading out with my Northwaves on to see what happens. The Northwaves are very roomy indeed - they're the same size as the Mavics, but I have to have the straps so they're overlapping the edge of the shoe, and wear thick socks so they don't move around, and what's more they have 2 insoles in them.

    Stupid feet.
