Got to Barnes Common last night on the way home, about 9.45, and very suddenly at the mini roundabout on LRR the temperature dropped several degrees - never noticed that before, is there often climate change when you reach the Common?

Oh, yes. I often notice this effect. A little bit of concrete-free greenery in the heat-island of london.

+2. I notice it more in the winter. It's as if heat caused by traffic is kept in by the buildings along the LRR (I have no idea whether this is true or not). Same thing happens in Richmond Park. Brrrrrr.

  • And Hyde Park/Ken Gardens. Lovely, it is. Especially when it's misty.

Stone - pavements, walls etc store reflect and absorb radiant heat during the day and give off the residue at night - grass, soil etc just absorb heat - hence drop in temperature in areas away from buildings - cities are usually warmer than the countryside around them

It wasn't so much that it was cooler on the common that surprised me, so much as the suddenness of the change - literally within a matter of yards, right at the edge of the common....

I get this and most noticeably during the Winter months when pulling onto the bridleway - there is a substantial drop in temperature after the roads / built up section. Generally I have my warmer tops open through town and have to zip up when I get to bridleway then unzip again at the other end.

Ian, when I used to ride my scooter home from work in the winter, I'd dread hitting Barnes common - I'd be as wrapped up as possible, but still riding in the freezing cold for half an hour, and just as I got literally half a mile from home the temperature would plunge by about 5 degrees and the cold would seep into my very soul. Or at least that's what it felt like.

It's the same when you go through Richmond Park in winter. Almost home from work, go through the gate, ouch.

Yeah the old RP micro climate! It can be perfectly clear outside the park and then laden with mist within. The joys of greenery.
