Clipless pedals

I recently bought a road bike, I'm an avid mountain biker so this is all new to me.
I was just checking out some road pedals and shoes and notice that the clip/cleat system is very different to clipless mtb pedals/cleats.
Would it be completely ridiculous for me to use some clipless mtb pedals on my road bike so I can use the same shoes for both bikes?
Is there any advantage or reason that there are different designs?

Nope, not ridiculous at all. I know from other posts on this board that quite a few people use SPD pedals on their road bikes as I did until a month or two ago.
I was having "hot spot" pain and I changed over to road shoes and Look Keo pedals and I've not had a problem since.
I must say though that proper road pedals do feel better to use as they support more of the sole of your foot and the chances are that road shoes will be a lot lighter than MTB shoes. I weighed both pair of shoes and the road shoes were a few grams over 1/2 the weight. The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle. ...Stapp’s Ironical Paradox Law

No, not at all. In fact that's what I'd do. It's expensive enough as it is getting started so this would be a good way of keeping costs down until you realise God intended for you to be a roadie and you can then invest in road cleats/shoes/pedals.0 -
A nice set of M520 / M540 SPD will be no issue.
If you do move onto road pedals in the future, you've got spare for the MTB.Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

I use SPD pedals on my road bike (Shimano A520), so I can use the same shoes on both bikes (MT31). Works well for me, though I wouldn't mind some lighter shoes!http://app.strava.com/athletes/287459
