I don't think Gladys is worth that much.

    No, AT, Gladys is priceless.

    Giant Avail range.

Specialized Dolce or Vita (whichever comes with the drops)

Trek 1 series WSD (WSD means for burds)

    Felt (burds bike)

Or any blokes bike at that price range (Giant Defy, Specialized Allez, Trek 1 series, Focus Varrido, Felt etc) but 3 sizes smaller....

About 5'7", long legs and good reach. I reckon she'd be alright on a man's bike tbh. but it's not a price range I'm familiar with - I got a much more expensive bike at a knock-down price, because I am lucky!

    Trek 1.2??

My gf has a Trek 1000, and is very happy with it.

She is similar dimensions to your friend, although probably slightly longer body and not as long legs.

    WSD version here: http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/114851.html

    Mens version here: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/12-double-2009-road-bike-ec016471?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=froogle

Haven't looked to see if it might be cheaper elsewhere.

Alternatively might be some bargain deals out there.........

    Quite flashy looking for £500

ME, me, me ME ME ME I want attention look at me.

    Here are some suggestions:

    Specialized Allez

    Trek 1.2

    Specialized Dolce

Specialized Sectaur - Basically an aluminium Robaix - longer head tube (than the Allez which is pretty long) for comfort

    Focus Varido Compact

Giant Avail 3 - This is the ladies version of the Defy 3

    Giant Defy 4

Also having had both a triple and a compact, I would advise getting a compact as it covers most 'comfortable' gear inches that the triple provides.

My next door neighbour has a shiny new Trek. I think towards the bottom of the range as it has Sora thoughout. She did the London Triathlon on it last weekend so I spent Saturday morning giving it a service/ sorting a few Evans induced problems.

I was impressed with it, a nice tight little bike. I needed to give it a quick test ride, and despite me being at least twice her weight I didn't detect any flex with handling still reasonably sharp. The Sora groupset was much better than the Sora I remember from 5 years ago too.
