edited September 2009 in MTB buying advice
since many sets of tyres have either worn down within two months or have been cut to beyond repair i'm looking for a tyre which does what it should and that's :-

Grip in muddy conditions
be hard wearing for tread for longevity
be a good thick tyre to aid resistance against punctures
not cost the earth.

i have extreme's of summer tyres and clay tyres but nothing which suits my needs as my last tyre has justobtained a tear in the side wall.

riding wise i'm mainly riding in forrest type terrian mixed in with flint's, chalk, some deep muddy bark and various branches fallen from trees mixed in with bridleway's linking between routes and some tarmac road.

anyhow anyone have any idea's on what i can buy which will do the all round job. ??

look forward to looking at options to go and buy
cheers
Hubba.

It's a big ask really. I'd go with Nevegals, they're tough as old boots, grip on most surfaces, and not too expensive. Not fast or light but good allrounders, which it sounds like is what you want.f

Swampthings are full-on mud tyres... Not what you want I reckon. Highrollers are good, though again not fast. Maxxis make great tyres though.

  • Tioga Extreme XC is an amazing tyre, its the tyre i first got with my first mtb and used them ever since! They're really grippy, tough and they ride well in the dry.

I had them, they were completely s**t  YMMV of course, OEM spec tyres can vary but mine were over a kilo each and had the most random unpredictable slides when they lost traction, which they did a fair bit. Horrible.

  • I've just pinched an old pair of Maxxis High Rollers 2.1's out of a mates shed and they are pretty good. He's hammered them for the past 6 months and they are still in fair shape. They do come up very thin so it may be worth looking at a wider size.

I'd agree with Northwind as well - go for the Nevagal DTC's as a good allrounder. Popular choice is using a Nevegal on the back and a blue groove on the front.

yeah i had a look at these too, what are they like for compound ? sof / hard etc.., if they don't wear down within a month or two should be a good buy..

just placed an order for 2.2 blue groove dtc & nevagal 2.1 dtc, will see what they are like, i bought from my local shop as i needed somthing to get out on the bike a maxis swamp thing & intense both at 2.35 2 ply tyres but they are just too much for me to keep up with everyone in the group, fine for me just out by myself but not for group rides... so guess i may sell these on as nearly new with 15miles put on them both, shame but i don't think i'll use these much.

thanks all for the advice i'll see how i get on with these kenda's, hopefully they will last longer than a couple of months, and again hopefully i dont get to many punctures !!

  • Nevegals. I have a 2.35" pair on M321's and a 1.95" on a pair of Spinergys. I love 'em. Get the 'Stick-E' rubber if you're hitting a lot of wet roots on your rides.

Panaracer Fire Mud Pro or Panaracer Trailrakers would be my suggestion.

i run maxxis high roller 2.35 ST upfront and advantage rear, i have the folding 2.25 Advantage on the rear and it fast, light, grippy and corners ok, however i have question marks over its toughness (i dont think the Maxxis folding tyres are as strong as the metal bead versions, based on experience that could just be coincedences mind)
. i dont think there is a tyre that does everything well, you have to comprimise and dcide what your proiroties are. i have tried quite a few tyres and my current combination is the best i have found so far, i mainly ride south wales trails centres, but i ride quite a lot of natural stuff too that can get gloopy
i here a lot of good things about conti rubber queens tho

p.s you dont need to throw out a tyre cos its ripped! use metal wire (electronics wire that you use for bridging circuit lanes, its only cheap)get a thick heavy duty needle and stitch it up like you would clothes, then cut a bit off an old tyre and glue or tape it over the wire to keep the tube away from puncturing,
i tore a tyre on the centre tread and did this, i have now done a 100 miles on it and it hasnt opened back up yet!

  • Hi Hubba, I've just changed to a set of Panaracer Fire XC Pros 2.1 on my full sus and ride across Dartmoor and they seem to be a good allrounder wet or dry and had the same as Captainsnappy a set of Nevegals 1.95 on me hardtail and there are all around the same price. But its what gives you confidence is half the battle

Kenda ExCavator dtc, meant to be a grippier and faster rolling version of the nevegal.

Got one coming and i can't wait to try it out, it's meant to be rather special. :D

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

I think like lots of things with tyres you can't have everything! Grip, Tough, Cheap ..... pick two!! Personally I think Hutchinson Toros (replacement for Bulldogs) are brilliant tyres - they have fantastic grip in difficult conditions, I never get punctures/side wall damage but they wear fairly quickly and are a bit expensive!
  • I would say go for any panaracer set you fancy, I have been using the xc pro 2.1 front and rear for years now and they take you anywhere with bags of confidence, last forever and I enjoy the odd lock-up or ten on tarmac :? look beautiful too :D

wow a load of people with lots more options lol..

i went down the kenda route and i have to say i'm quite happy with grip, (touching wood now) i've not yet had a puncture and not yet lost any traction... however it does make the bike feel a little loose when swapping betwen cambers like the frame has sideways movement - but i've put that down to the quite wide tread pattern on the nevagal...

let's see how hard wearing they are from a tread point of view :-)..
