Not sure what happened from the picture with the article but the speculation from the comments is that either the lorry left-hooked the cyclist or the cyclist was in the blindspot of the lorry after riding up the inside of the lorry. Either way the rider got off very lightly with only a broken thigh and the accident happened less than 100yds from the entrance to the BRI A&E.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Had to stop reading the comments before I got a bit angry!

    Hope he'll be OK.

I had a lorry patiently wait behind me, then take their time to pull around me and take a wide berth on my way home today. Very impressive, maybe word is getting through.

  • A broken thigh is not getting off lightly. The femur (bone in your thigh) is the strongest bone in your body, it takes alot of force to brake it, it is a time critical injury and you can bleed to death very quickly from it. It is going to take surgery and a very very long time to recover.

Most lorry/cycle incidents have resulted in a fatality that I've read about hence the comment.

  • eek - that photo is a horror. He's one lucky guy to not be killed.

Of course us on this forum know how to cycle safely - has anyone got tips on polite ways to pointout to people they're doing something really dangerous (eg trying to squeeze past a lorry where there isn't space? I occassionally wince at things I see.....

I think about this often on my commute, but I've not said anything yet. As a newbie to cycling I want to do it til my knees wear out, so I'm happy to stay way behind large vehicles every time.

Chatting to a friend who works round the corner from the scene of yesterdays accident and it would seem that four eye witnesses have come forward and have said that the lorry was turning long before contact was made with the cyclist.

we have been here before i know but for a minute lets all take a long hard look at ourselves

If that cyclist died ( OP post) the driver of the lorry would have been arrested for death by dangerous, chucked in a cell, DNA, fingeprints etc, interviewed and been on bail for months.....

    for what?

because some muppet, without any training, without any insurance and without any road sense...crawled up the inside of his HGV without a care in the world....if thats what happened? but seems to be the case

If this is the case my thoughts are with the lorry driver for the distress he must be going through due to some clueless suicidal bloke on a bike

I presume that this was the incident in Manchester

Doog - unless you are one of the eye-witnesses who has come forward then your post is complete conjecture. You have no idea if he has had any training - many cyclists do, if he has any insurance - insurance - many cyclists do or if he has any road sense - many cyclists do. If he was "crawling" up the side of a lorry and it had been turning for a long time then he'd surely have had time to stop. I'm not saying everyone should jump on the "blame the driver" bandwagon either.

However, I'd be interested to know just how many drivers in collisions with cyclists do eventually get charged and once charged convicted. I'd guess not many. The recent protest against the CPS was because a lorry hit a cyclist from BEHIND and argued he didn't see him so the CPS dropped the case.

Yes cyclists need to be aware of driver blind spots but the onus must surely be on the driver to also be aware of what they are doing. You wounldn't put David Blunkett in the driving seat yet it seems fine to have so many vehicles on the road that have appauling all round vision.
