Creaky Stem

I have a Trek hybrid which I use to commute. I have noticed that in dry warm weather the stem/bar clamp creaks when I apply even the slightest pressure. Loud enough to warn pedestrians of my approach (yup it's annoying).

It is a bontrager adjustable stem, that looks very plasticy, is it time to replace, if so, anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

  • I'd give it a quick service first...bit of new grease and I reckon it'll be fine. Unless the bearings are shot.

I think you have misunderstood what I am talking about, maybe I wasn't clear. The stem clamp that clamps onto the centre of the handlebar is the culprit. So when I lean on the handlebars, the whole assembly creaks.

All bearings are silky smooth, and I don't see anything I can service...

    Thanks,
