i am in the process of upgrading my groupset and have noticed they have the crankset in 180mm arm length available. Now the general consensus is that this is by far too long in relation to my height (5'10") whereby they recommend a 35" inside leg.

My riding style has always been using long gears rather than high cadence and thought the longer length equals more leverage particularly on hill s. C.ould someone kindly try and explain why this is not the case.

TIA
Mark

if you do a search on the forum there are quite a few threads on the relationship between leg length (and other lengths) and crank lengths. There are no 'rules' to this, just guides, and suggested equations to link the two.

At your height I'd be surprised that 180 is the best option, unless you like bmxing 8)

To illustrate, I'm 5'11" and used a 172.5 on the roadie.

I agree with maddog, but at this length there might also be problems with reduced ground clearence when cornering, and foot overlap with front wheel (especially if you ever use mudguards).

    I am 6' 6" with a 36' inside leg and I am absolutely fine with a 175mm
