£1,000 mark for a hardtail - which one.

Been out of the biking loop for a while for various reasons, so this is why I'm asking.
A friend is after a hardtail for the 1K mark.
He has seen the Boardman Pro, is this most people's choice at the moment?
What else is out there at the moment, any bargains to be had?

For XC?
How are you anyway?!0 -
sorry Sonic - Yeah it would be mainly for XC but he is a big-ish guy weight wise so something well made, a bit stronger than normal, a good fork up front would be ideal.
I am good - House is up now so just waiting for that to go through then I'm off, its all gone a bit quiet and I'm in a bit of a limbo land but its OK.
Her brother has moved in, good lad who I have known for a long long time. He is helping with bills etc... we are living the lads life!!
Thanks for asking Sonic - Appreciate it.0 -
So many options at 1k! Sounds like he probably doesn't need some steep angled feather weight racer, and may apprciate something in the 5 inch fork region with some tough parts.
I like the look of the Genesis Core 00:

Good adjustable fork, SLX kit (inc chainset). Would have liked to see better rims - but you can get this bike for less and buy a nice handbuilt set with the change.
Glad to hear things are working out!0 -
you could also try out online specialist merlin cycles, they have some great deals at the moment and £1000 willl get you a high spec handbuilt hardtail with plenty of fork and groupset options, also look at charge dusters, steel framed hardtails are back in fashion again and these are absolute belters, i also wouldnt worry about trying to get a five inch travel fork, 100mm is plenty for trails even red and black graded, its all how you use the travel that counts plus theyre easier to get up hills with than a five inch plus fork as the head angle will be a bit steeper, if you are serious about 5 inch travel bikes try out norcos hardcore hardtails but there is a severe weight penalty with these types of bikes and need some serious lungs to get to the top but going down will be like a steamroller on steriods :-)0

I don't think there is always a weight penalty - however it may suit the weight of the rider. Same with angles: an adjustable fork allows you to tailor this.0

I really like the core 40 but there's none left anywhere around here.0

Hey, thought I'd chip in given that I am the big-ish chap himself :-)
Jim, I figured as I won't see you till next week I'd track you down on the internet and have a look for myself.
A bit more info.... Yeah, I'm a big lad, probably 16 stone(ish) did loads of riding when I were a lad but not for quite some time. Anyways, the problem is I'm looking for a bike which is through these pesky bike to work deals, the catch being that I have to go to Halfrauds, that being said for a £1k bike I pay just over £500 plus I have a Halfords trade card so should get maybe an extra 10% on that so may look at up to £1200 or so.
So that's the deal, GT or Boardman are the main two they stock but pretty much anything "off the shelf" they can get hold of.

I looked at Orange Crush and P7 as two possible HT choices on cyclescheme. You might need to be quick,as I think the 2010 models are over the £1k price limit now.
I went for a Boardman Full Sus in the end.www.louthnet.com/LAMB - Louth Area Mountain Bikers0
