Trundling along the Marylebone road yesterday and was overtaken by guy in red and yellow jersey, ripping along on a Bianchi. Further up the road, there he is again, with his gang - about 8 or so guys, all in same kit, all carrying backpacks/shoulder bags. Off they pop at high speed, sneering at yours truly on his crusty Sirrus...

The jerseys were from London Phoenix club - but surely they weren't doing a training ride in town? They were two abreast up the bus lane, although fair do's, they were flying...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

They appear to be the cycling Borg, all looked the same, same physique, same gear, only the bikes differed. And they looked really focused

Yep, sounds like my club. Underneath all that they'er a really nice bunch of guys. You should see us lapping the inner circle, it's awesome. Sadly that's been postponed until winter. For some reason 20 plus blokes hooning arround the inner circle at 25 mph plus was seen as a safety issue

I used to be a member of Phoenix about 10 years ago :) But my only involvement was to go on a cycling trip with them to the Peak District.

    However

There was no way i was cycling up those peaks so I hired a horse and rode up on horseback instead,,
Needless to say I was never invited back :(:(

I've sat in a Phoenix bunch a few times. I doubt very much if they would sneer at you for what you were riding. Poetic license I hope...

+1. they're a really nice bunch of blokes, focussed but very friendly. Quite unlike my local cycling club who are the most miserable bunch of bastards going, it's no wonder they've only got about 6 members left !!!! What is it about some cycling clubs that makes them so unfriendly?

Ok, well maybe in my fitter and less fatter dreams I might sign up one day. But I'm not sure yellow and red would suit me...

Problem is a lot of clubs are cliques.

Yep. From what I've seen, Phoenix are def one of the friendlier clubs, and the members tend not to take themselves too seriously.
