2 days in at glentress and it's not going well.

My hand/wrist is so sore (from the crash not long ago) and I can barely brush my teeth without pain :(

I can only hold very loosley with myright hand, cant use the front brake without pain and it's causing me to strain my forearm.

Also, cus I'm having to hold tighter and brake mainly with my lef hand, it's covered in blisters, and I keep cooking my rear brake.

You hav no idea how depressing this is :( and I'm no sure what to do :(

meh.

Strap up your wrist/hand, ice everything every evening, take some pain killers and a bucket of cement and harden the f*** up!

Seriously though - have an easy day, ride soem greens or whatever, rest the sore hand, get soem support stuff for it to help out, painkillers and what not and give it a go again after a short break - its tough on hols to miss out on the reason you went for but if you hurt yourself more the 6-8 weeks off the bike after will hurt more!

  • Already wearing a pro sport wrist support with it heavily strapped :(
  • Wrist support

    2 x Ibuprofen

    2 x Paracetamol

You can take the 2 lots together every 4 hours, or alternate them (and I know this as I was told this by a doctor when I had a similar injury to my hand)

Speak to the pharmacist for dosage (MGs etc)

    oh and MTFU!

Have to agree with the painkillers and ice approach while keeping riding.

You can heal when you get home!

I totally know how you feel.

I only started riding about 4 months ago (at the age of 28, im 29 now) after doing no physical activities for like 15 years.

Since then I've smashed up my ribs (the first day I rode the new bike I went over the bars, also bruised my internals a fair bit), twisted my ankle repeatedly (twisted it badly and because it's weakened I'm more prone to going over on it) and have had sore wrists, thumbs, knee etc.

The rib's were the worst, right when I'd decided to put 100% effort into getting fit, I go and damage myself in such a way that I'm not able to ride. Thing is, I kinda ignored the doctors advice and kept on riding anyway (in considerable pain) which made them take much longer to heal; even now, 4 months later I still have pain down the left side of my rib cage.

So i'd say take it easy for a while and get back into it slowly; I rushed it and am still suffering because of it but I just didn't want to stop when I was so dead-set on getting fitter. But I'm sure had i rested up properly after damaging myself I would be finding it all a lot easier now.

I feel for you, its a long old way to go especially if its not going well.

Sounds like you're making the best of it though.

I'm in Wales at the mo and found myself a bit out of my depth, if it wasn't for the 5 hour journey I might have turned round and gone home. Luckily I bought some mtfu with me in the form of a fs bike and I'm doing ok now.

Let us know how you get on and give us a trail report on your return,

Why not take a day off from biking, i know a bit radical but do some walking, scope out some trails for the next day that sort of thing! have a lie in??

Im off to Fort Bill next week, and i know i won't be able to bike every day so i have other stuff planned for the off days, its tough but sometimes its for the greater good!!

    You'll be alrite Benj!

I broke my leg, and carried on running around... Literally, running around! With weight too, cause I'm an Uber man! And NO painkillers either! 8) I thought it was just a sprain... And that it was normal to hurt for 3 months...

But it fixed itself! (Ahhh, the body is amazing8))

But just be a man about it, and then brag away when someone hurts themselves!

James - been there, mate - failed to jump down a flight of stairs when I was drunk back in '94 and destroyed my ankle. The doctor said I'd have been better of breaking it so he could have stuck it in plaster for protection, it was sprained so badly.

Anyhow, I did the worst thing ever - didn't bother pursuing physiotherapy and instead wore a support over a tubi-grip all the time, but I just kept spraining it again and again. I convinced myself it was "just weak now" and put up with it until I totally destroyed the other ankle playing football a couple of years later.

The other one was a worse injury and I was referred to a physiotherapist to try and recover my range of movement. She went to take measurements off of my "good" ankle, then asked me which one I was seeing her about because they were both buggered!

She told me I'd done the worst thing possible by not having physio with the previous injury, as she would recommend starting rehab exercise no later than 72 hours after it gets hurt. So I ended up having physio on both ankles at the same time. End result is I now no longer have "weak" ankles - can't believe I just accepted that for so long.

Best one for rehab that you can do at home is get a long towel, roll it into a sausage lengthwise, hold an end in each hand and put it round your bad ankle. Then pull against the ankle in different directions, giving just enough resistance so that your ankle can take it. This slowly builds up strength, with you in total control of the intensity and it really works wonders, I can tell you.
  • Well I took the advice from you guys...

went to the bike shop, got my brakes sorted, can of MTFU, strapped the wrist so it was practically in a cast after using freeze spray and went to the freeride area about 4pm.

Got some MINT photo's of jumping/dropping etc + a few videos. But you'll have to wait for those :)

having a morning out tomorrow then going back to the freeride area in the evening....

Gotta say thanks for the encouragement guys, it did actually really help and today was fu@king brilliant in the end!! :D:D

    James.

Been there! Came off on my way home from work - the slowest speed crash any one has ever seen  on to a small tree stump hidden in long grass. Rode to work the following day because it only felt a little sore and by home time my ribs were so sore I could barely walk! It took months to heal because I didn't rest properly and I still feel twinges very occasionally now (15 months on). Won't be doing that again...
