chain slipping

Hey i've just brought a new bike rode it for the first time and the chain slips not often but sometimes especially when I put some power into pedalling could anybody tell me why? should i take the bike back and get the bike mech to fix the problem or is it easy enough to fix myself?

Sounds like the gears need fine tuning.

Sounds like the indexing needs adjusting- there should be a barrel adjuster on the mech or on the gear changer.0
